Hello!
First sorry to post speed paintings here, but I need some cretique and direction on where im going. Here is the story. Im working on building up values and color. I think I am improving comparing with what I used to do say 2 weeks ago. The question is - am I going in the right direction, what do those images look like to you? I figured that I cant judge my speed paintings objectivly. Also, I think my forms and shapes look too loose, and thats just the way I paint. I think I wonder with my "brush" too much. Also I think that they lack tecture, as opesed to something that Craig Mullins paints, or Capt. Flush Garden. So please, give me some thoughts, on where do I have to go with this. Sometimes I do use reference, I never use it for sampling colors or anything like that, It either is in a magazine or as a photo on my second monitor. Is it good or bad to learn by using reference? I hope not, becuase I feel that every paintng is better then the last one. I even is less afraid to start a painting of unknown for me subject. Like a usual town or nature. Here are some speeds I drew over this week, in chronological order. Let me know your thoughts.

Sorry to focus on this small point and leave the main question unanswered, but I would say that on the issue of texture, you need not worry.
since you mentioned Craig, I suggest you look at one or two of the earlier pics in the gallery. They are done using smooth default regular round brushes and they are hardly less amazing.
I would say, especially since you seems so keen on improving rather than just larking around, that you put things like texture and custom brushes out of your mind for a while because they aren't the things that will make or break your picture. IMHO.
I hope it doesn't interfere with your ideas, but I like you first pic the most.
maybe try working over some drawings -- pencil/digital line drawings.. [shrug]
just try doing different stuff to normal for the sake of it. you might stubble across things that you like which might help you to improve.
gotta go |

Yeah.. slowly but to the point I begin to understand that texture is not really everything. Thanks for pointing that out. Thanks for your suggestion!!!
What do you think I should concentrate most on to improve my skills? _________________ Dennis Sedov

hey D,
I think your color sence is fantastic.
The only thing I see that is holing back the desired results are your shapes.
you get a little sloppy. The edges are well controled, but some times your shapes are not as defined as they could be.
maybe work a little more on that and you will be on the right track.
I hope that helps or even makes sence. _________________ **Have a Nice Day**

ur ideas are great
but you aren't
presenting them correctly
its like a waiter serving ur
favorite food on a garbage can lid
i like one in particular
but you need to take
away some of that bluriness
and add Color Details
Lighting Shading
Get my point?
Just a suggestion. _________________

Ok hello Dsedov, this is what I see in your pictures and since you wanted comments and suggestions I am throwing some tips in here to you.
What I have learned from Spooge and Capt.Flush when looking at their pics is, and this took me a while to understand, but if you look at their pictures there are a lot of things going on, even in their speedys. They are using a lot of different objects in the background, trees, vehicles and you name it. All of those things helps the depth in the picture and gives the picture some sort of a atmospheric perspective, the same atmospheric perspective Davinci was talking about and I guess it isnt 100% exactly the same but I like to call it Atmospheric perspective cause it gives a lot of depth.
Now, back to your pictures, what I see in your pictures is that a lot of them is with a single colored background and with one object in the foreground. The pictures works that way but it is a lot of perspective depth that is lost and also the feeling that there is motion and dynamics in the picture is lost, to help that I suggest to add some of the earlier things I said above.
I made an overpaint and its not perfect in any way but it shows you that you could add some more perspective to one of your pictures above, you can also add more things behind, like big poles and big industry things in the back. Those things could also be lit but with a paler light and a paler shadow added on them.
Well I am also trying to learn all of these things mentioned here so maybe some of it sounds diffusing, I hope its ok with the explanations here and that they helped a little.
Still though I like some of your speedys and the latest one with the landscape really rocked, nice pictures in here also.
see you and keep it up
now I am off for a shower since I was delayed..hehe

Speeds great:) But imo U use to much black color. U should avoid black as fire in paints, try to give shadows with brighter color with a contrast tu surroundings. _________________ You must click here |

that big difference I see of your works: the lack of more tuned values and of course, too loose shapes..
but I think that you need have patience building lighter and darker values slowly.
as Matthew pointed out, a nice background will make a lot of sense.
/one which doesnt succeed on that still |
