This is called The Acolyte, and I painted the sky in Painter 7 and the rest in Photoshop7. I can never achieve realistic skin tones, and I'm afraid to use photos for reference because they are not mine and are copyrighted. Please critique this and tell me how you would make the angel more realistic. Thanks! Very Happy

I've found that getting skin to look right has more to do with lighting than color. But in a sense, they're both the same thing. The more you see light as color and color as light, the better your paintings will become overall.

Oh, wow, Kamal! I see your point. I know she sticks out like a sore thumb in the painting. But, yeah, the lighting effects you gave really look great! They also add a lot of mood. Thank you very much!

You can always make studies from reference for yourself.
If you don't put them in a portfolio or sell them it's ok to show them
(as long as you mention what you did).

And you can always use photos to get a rough idea of what the lighting should look like.

Never guess when you can find out (it has gone stale ... I know)

Once you understand why you see what you see in the photos you can make up coherent lighting.
But use reference as long as you are learning!

The image has a lot of potential.
Generally I'd try to separate light and shadow more.
And (like Kamal) play with the position of the lightsource!

Somehow she doesn't really look female. I'd make the shoulders more narrow ...
and the hips wider.

Don't know if these links help:

so far mainly light has been discussed...as for color..in this image you tend to stay within the range of not more than a few skin colors..
realize that skin has a variety of colors and it seems as though you were unsure of your shadow placement. take chances and don't be afraid...add more of the dark tone you used under the breast...then again...the background is warmlighted so you probably should be using purples and such to shade.
but look at your own skin...it's not just one peachy tone with a few orang-browns...its browns greys purples greens and yellows all combined..practicing with portraits a lot will help acquire this sense a bit better--first practice with painting the world you live in, and THEN you can paint your own world
