Thanx all and Matthew, hehe the last B&W sketch already looks 100% like a tree, so it would be too easy haha Wink

*SIGH* Mix of photos then painted on, I'm just too sloppy working this way, too much in a hurry, and it sure reminds me of one of them oni pics spooge made...

Damn... with every speed, I just hope to get better, but when I look at it after the finish, I still suck.... errr. Any suggestions on what to improve looking at my speeds? Any direction?

Flush thats nice , no question. I never tried painting on photos, but seems to work well.

@DSedov: Not sure if you can improve by reading this, but some things that come to my mind. Work larger. use Selection tool to keep a clean edge, vary in colors, play with brushes, and post even you think its not good. he he thats tha reason why this thread is movin on so extremly fast .... just kidding Embarassed

Thanks alot See. Im trying gradually to build my skills. I started with values, because my pictures were very flat. I think I dont suffer from it anymore, well maybe a little bit. Now I strugle with color. After I get it right for my self, Ill move to form, which is ... well everything I paint just seams wrong.. Things like perspecive and foreshorting just scare me away. Though I know the rules, I think I'll have to practice and practice ... and practice..

Here is another one: Dont with ref of a pic I found somewere. I think my brain stoped producing ideas, so I just look at photos, outside, or wherever and paint what I see.

See. Do you know any good resource? Im really stuck, because I never took any art classes, and my BA is in freaking Physics (and with that I work as a mattepainter and compositor =))) Im just trying to come over bad habbits I have, but I think I might not go in the right direction, though it feels like I improve.

just passing through

edit-Dennis, I would suggest drawing more. (drawing does not really just mean using a sharp instrument and use mostly line) And the idea of speed paint is not really fast execution, that's OK, but it is more learning how to simplify to what is important, and the speed comes from the simplification. Like that pine tree silhouetted there. You painted it fast, lets say 2 minutes. The challenge is to look at pine trees, understand them in the round, then analyze the shapes that result from the form in the lighting situation you have. That takes a while. I guess that is what I mean by drawing. Now with this better understanding, paint them again in 2 minutes, it should be better. So think for an hour, paint for a minute.

And dont be afraid to paint out what you have done and do it over. Paint those 2 minute pine trees 20 times, till you get them right. This is instead of rendering needles for an equivalent period of time, which would just make things worse and worse. Contrasty detail without understanding is not your friend.

This is a sketch I did few months back, didn't post it because I wasn't sure if the finished piece was gonna turn out ok.. finally solved the last hard parts and it's almost ready, it's very different.. the pose and concept changed along the way.

This is the scribble that got me started on the whole thing:

Bg that kicks ass. It reminds me of this Dungeons and Dragons toy I had when I was a kid.

spooge demon, I like your idea of simplification... that's what I've been trying to do when I thought I was going for speed (well, speed is also a factor).

Nice tips Spooge. btw. Have you tried 3d modeling yet? Now it would good time to try it because there's a program called Zbrush that's quite easy to use, it's like working with clay on a computer.. People are doing great things with it, check this out: http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=013031&p= It's really fast to use because it's designed for Wacom. You can start from a sphere, "painting" (pressing the stylus, just like you paint in Photoshop) on it raises the surface and Alt + painting lowers it, there's pressure sensitivity and size options. Ctrl + clicking rotates the model. (the buttons might be different, can't remember exactly)
Here's a link to the trial version (I think the saving is disabled in it) http://pixologic.com/index.cgi Would be great to see what you can do with it Wink

Vyle, you're very creative and I like how action packed your pics are!

Glad you like them LC3

Actually I like this more than the two above Very Happy

The Mad Hatter. I lost patience with this drawing long before it was finished. Head down is one big blunder.

Spooge, thanks for everything you've taught me (directly and indirectly)about the importance of shape, and for showing us just how much you can get away with when it comes to light.

Actually an old character design for a cut-animation, I just found it looking through some of my old stuff today.

Thanks Matthew. Bottom of the sea - are you luring people into doing a paintover? He, he, might even do so later, but probably don't have the time.

Jesus Christ.
I have been doing this ship during this weekend and worked with it some more today. When I was saving the piece the computer crashed and when I re-started it the only thing that remained was this top shit and some purple and green lines in the bottom of the picture.
This picture was gonna be finished and was going to be the end-study of my ship-study and I wanted it to be detailed and all, dang, stupid computer, I have only had problems lately with the computer and there have been many crashes and all, that spy-stupid ware everywhere, thank god for Ad-Aware, thank god not for the stupid viruses everywhere.
Does anyone have any tips on how to fix the computer so it doesnt download all the stupid cookies everywhere, btw, I have set the cookies level to medium security, doesnt help though.
Maybe I should move to Africa and only paint with oils and never look at a computer again...hmm.

Ok sorry for my fired up speech there, thank you for listening guys and thank you for being my on-line therapists. :)
Matthew is happy again now and does not care about the ship piece.

Not entirely convinced I enjoy using the brush engine in PS7... but it's hard to get the same results in Painter... ah well.
