I now have a copy of Photoshop CS (gift) and after reviewing the other topic I'm not so sure I want to install over my faithful PS 5.0.

All I use photoshop for is brush's to paint. None of the other features other then layers are used by me. With that in mind is there any reason to upgrade or should I just keep what I'm using and give the box to somebody else who doesnt have PS?

give it to me !! Smile, upgrade, definately, the brush engine in 7 and cs is by far better than in 5, or install alongside, you can run them both (not at the same time)

There are always purists that always defer to an older version when a new one comes out. Even when version 6 came out, a good portion of sijun users (this was 3 years ago, mind you) were still refusing to upgrade to 5.0 (or 5.5) because of memory concerns.

Thing is, most people forget that when new software comes out, you probably need new, better hardware, no matter how badass your computer was when you bought it.

You don't need more memory to take advantage of any of the extras in Photoshop. All the extra features in Photoshop are very low memory demanding. Your demand for memory is directly proportional to the size of image you wish to create. If you create images using less than 30 layers at no larger than 1600x1200px you could get by extremely well with 256mb of ram and an older CPU.

Using a phenominal amount of layers (over 350) does require alot of memory. Creating images at 6000x9000px demands alot of memory. Doing both requires even more memory. But, few people here go to either of these extremes. The sad fact is that most artists really don't know that much about Photoshop, its features, or how it works with hardware. If hardware is really a concern it would do well to learn and research the limitations of the program and how it tasks resources to memory.

Telling artists to do research and to learn to use their software is often a null issue in my experience. Most illustrators seem to disregard this as useless to painting, so it is quickly ignored. The illustrators that have ever considered my points as relevent are the pros that already know all this non-art related stuff from actually doing their own research.
