Thanks plasmodium, I can see whose work it is generally without looking at the names too. As long as being who you are makes you happy but, I , I just want to sing! But I am glad that you think it is unique. Its easy to be either different or not suck, but being both is a full time job.
And you question about brushwork- I dont think it is the brushwork, it is the quality of the shape design that makes something work or not.
But here is a tip from old illustrators, and I am breaking the fellowship by telling you. They dont know I know. Its called stroking the short axis. Most shapes are longer in one direction than the other, and if you fill them with any kind of gestural quality, the illustrator answer is to stroke across the shortest axis. Some illustrators do this like a nervous tick. Sargent did exactly the opposite, but, uh, he knew what he was doing.
EssenmitSosse, hmmm, I think that just the basic drawing needs to be improved. We are looking up at the arches but across at the figure. The gesture of the figure looks a little stiff, try to get some change of direction in the head and torso, like he is moving. Get a toy gun and act out the movement. I think it is unusual that the torso stays square to the target while shooting or pointing. Now you have a solid excuse to bring one shoulder forward and one back, get some nice ellipses and sections through the body, etc.
Use whatever you can to reason through the bigger points like the mismatch between the arches and figure, takes some time and thought to get that right, but it is more important than detail. Or what I should say is that no amount of fancy brushes or textures or care or rendering will hide mistakes like that. Actually makes it worse. Like tracing something and flopping it. Consciousness of guilt, busted.
Just say no to glowing eyes, thanks. (I am sure someone will look through the steaming compost of goodbrush to point out a glowing eye or 2. Apologies. There are some lensflares there too, done before widespread abuse) . I would do a paintover, but I kinda already did that.

*Drummer boy John Clem of the 12th Michigan, just ten years old, became celebrated as "Johny Shiloh" after an artillery shell smashed his instrument during that battle. During the Federal retreat at Chickamauga in 1863, he would shoot a Confederate who dared try to take the artillery caisson upon which he was riding, and win himself new headlines as "the Drummer Boy of Chickamauga." He remained in the army all his active life and retired as a major general shortly before the First World War.*

Wow, this is a lovely page! Nice work everyone.
"Monstah Monstah!", inspired by a certain artist who's name might or might not be found in that phrase.

ceenda -forgot to mention, that pic rocks. Nice one. I thought for a sec before I properly saw, that it was one of mon's. At the time my monitor was in grayscale, so it looked even more so like his work, (it looks good in b&w aswell btw). The colour really makes the extra bit cooler, it's a great pic, like it. |

I've often thought that there was a lack of bloodthirsty nymphomaniacs during the Napoleonic era...
... however, until I learn to draw women properly, you'll have to make do with strangely dressed transvestites. Don't say I'm not good to you.
