I've admired Jason Manley's and Justin Sweet's painting style and thought I'd give it a go. Don't ask me why but I always end up doing vikings.
C&C please. Let 'er rip kids....Me first - His head may be a bit big and his left arm is wonky...

ROFLMAO!!!
Seriously though, this kicks ass in a major way. I would perhaps like to see the lower area worked on a little more to bring it in line with the top...but hmm...the way you have it now draws more focus to his upper body so I suppose that works out fine. |

Hi, I like the sketchy (don't know if this word exists ) style. Will it stay in this state (which is fine to me) or are you going to work the details out? I'm not sure, but it seems, that the head sits a little too far to the left. _________________ *** Hi! I'm a signature virus! Copy me into your signature to help me spread! *** |

Yup, it's gonna stay sketchy.
Looking at it again I'm wondering if I should have given more info to the neck to show it's curved up...dunno.
Anywho, thanks for the crit francmidi, every little bit helps. |

for a viking he his shoulders are awfully narrow. broaden them a bit and fix the sword and everything will be cool. Great stuff otherwise. _________________ It has been clinically proven that other people's pain IS funny. |

I like Justin's work too, and spend a lot of time observing what he does. This seems like a good time to re-think what I think I know, I think
Colours - the Justin Sweet palette consists very much of neutrals and greys, is usually warm, blues seem rare, yellowish. Sometimes monochrome with a few crucial colour accents. From what I've seen of your work, Mark, it's quite strong and colourful. In my view it's one of your cool features. Cool indeed, you seem to usually have a predominantly cool scheme, no?
Focal points - Sweet and the others are very keen on moving the eye around consciously with usually everything leading to one strongy emphazised focal point.
I seem to remember he's also quite focused on making the main silhouette pop out strongly.
Anyways, my own thoughts on Sweet. I'd be glad to hear your notes and contrasting views ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ www.torsteinnordstrand.com |

dfacto - Yes, you're probably right. That's probably what bugged me about his left arm.
Torstein Nordstrand - I was interseted in exploring the style in a general sort of way. I liked their darker bg's and how they painted from back to front and how it resulted in a moody feel. Not that they're re-inventing the wheel, they just do it well and I'm always looking to explore new methods if I see them executed well. Looking at it again, the blue (or the amount of it) is probably a mistake in this case, as it draws too much unintended attention. I have a bad habit of noodling things too much and not being able to leave them when I should - always a stuggle with me.
Cool colour scheme, hmmm... Looking at some stuff again, I suppose that might be true, but it's not intentional. I do like contrasting colours (warm/cold). Boy, now you're going to give me a complex. I won't touch blue again.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Cheers! |
