"Where I hang my phoenix coat when I'm not wearing it, what I feed my spotted rat, and other mysteries"
This is not actually new work--I did this ages ago, but it looked so shabby next to the Martin Johnson Heade painting I was using for reference I decided it was a failure and put it away. I got it out again today and decided it wasn't so bad.
Anyway, this is a picture of this ugly tailless rat I used to have. The rat's name was Shakespeare. It's supposed to be in the style of the Hudson River School, but I didn't nail it. That mysterious lighting effect still eludes me.

it's beautiful, not your best work but nonetheless very nice, i think the blue/purple is a little strong and it kind of competes for attention with the rest of it but other than it looks very, very nice |

Quite possibly my fave from you, Socar. Really nice image.
For a crit, I would probably say that the way the lower cloth hangs out of frame at that point doesn't create the best composition to my eyes. That cloth also feels a little heavy. Personally, I'd be tempted to remove it, or replace it with something smaller and lighter (lighter in terms of weight). _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

a failure? looking shabby? Id rather say its my favorite of your paintings. Right I love it. The cloth on the right and the tree is so awesome I could look at it all day long.
The only crit is the same suma had, the smaller cloth, thats the only thing I dontreally like.
Oh and I think the blueish purple fits the picture VERY well. I have to say it again: LOVELY :] |

I can see it now.
Don't like it as much as your other paintings. I guess because of the composition.
Not because the image is bad it is not!
It's because the other rat paintings were amazing.
I cropped it and saved the upper half to my harddrive. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Socar nice to see you post again, still though I would like to see you more in the speedy too. :)
Yes there is a mysterious lighting in this one as you said but I tend to like your newer ones even more but it is a cool piece indeed. :)

Thanks for the responses--much appreciated!
Matthew - Yeah, yeah, I know...I suck for not contributing to the speedpainting thread lately. I'm buried up to my neck in work, unfortunately, so I doubt I'll be posting much in the way of fun stuff for a while. I kind of dragged this one out of the folder of bad art shame just so people wouldn't think I dropped off the face of the earth!
AndyT - Haha, thanks! I guess I DO do better on the long, narrow compositions. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Glad you like the top half, anyhow!
gLitterbug - Thanks very much--I'm glad you like it so much! Just goes to show beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
Sumaleth - Thank you! I'd totally paint out that second cloth, since a few people have remarked on it, but I haven't the time at the moment. I wish I would get the hang of layers so I could just...delete stuff that doesn't work with the click of a button.
Flp - Thanks! I usually paint "wishful-thinking" landscapes--places I would rather be than wherever I am. Unfortunately, no places like them seem to exist.
spyroteknik - Thanks! Glad you like it despite its shortcomings. I'm not sure what possessed me to start with quite such a brilliant purple, there--it's definitely brighter than my usual colour scheme. I guess I got a little carried away. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ Dignity isn't important. It's everything.

i really like this. I think some parts of the cloth and especially the rat look a little flat. but this could well be because the rest looks so full of depth. Great work! _________________ talent is overrated. |
