There's nothing better than CDex for free CD ripping. You can get it at Maz Sound under "CD Rippers".

Get EAC for free: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Exact Audio Copy is as far as I know the best program for ripping (other people have the same opinion: http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=107 )

It does id3-tagging from cddb and combined with LAME for mp3-encoding it's hard to beat.

I'd recommend EAC too. However, regardless of what machine I've used EAC on, I've _always_ had to manually set up the CD drive preferences as EAC seems to rip the data wrongly using Accurate Stream.

You could also try Apple's new iTunes for Windows. It has a nice ripping function built in.

Don't forget, even Windows Media Player (version 9+) has ripping facilities too.

Don't trust any of these people except balistic.

MAZ-SOUND is THE place to get the correct software. If it's not on maz-sound, you probably don't need it.

Snakebyte: iTunes can rip a CD and play it at the same time which is kinda cool. You're thinking of the MusicStore which is a part of iTunes. I'd use it to buy tracks but the MusicStore is only available in America at the moment but there's a UK and other versions coming out soon.
