Hello All

Im feeling a little giddy because I have just finished my first picture on my new computer and this is my firs post. I wanted to know peoples opinion and what I can do to improve it? And how do people like Julie Dillion get those lush clothes effects?
Lastly I have Photoshop but are there any advantages to getting hold of Painter?

Unfortunately I dont have access to a scanner so this is a pencil sketch I Stole from Sam Liu of Itchstudios

I think it looks pretty good. Nice fluid style. What bothers me, though, is the jagged linework. Looks like you had anti-aliasing turned off? Also, white backgrounds are generally held to be a no-no. It distracts from the main subject and gives an unfinished look.

Photoshop versus Painter has long been a point of contention, it really depends on what kind of look you're going for. Photoshop is all about ease and control, taking advantage of all the unique possibilities that digital art offers. It's good for pretty much any style, from painting to graphic design. Painter on the other hand is designed to mimic real, traditional media. It's basically a digital reproduction of real life tools. If you want your digital work to look not-digital, then Painter's great. It gives images a lot of life and texture, but the interface is complete hell.

Lol @ lensflare Wink

Well the image is not balanced well imo.
The different parts of the image don't work together too well
(colors of planet & mech for example)
And the realistic style of the ground doesn't go with the comic style of the mech.

I'd try to find a coherent palette for the whole image and change the composition.

I think I'd like the objects if they were isolated.
Can you tell how you made them maybe?

I'd look at tutorials in Sumaleth's Link Archive ...
that way you'll soon know what beginner's mistakes there are and how to avoid them.

I love the comic book style of the monkey dude above. Am I seeing the hand correctly with the thumb on the wrong side? Anyway, keep it up...especially for someone who didn't draw before, you will get better and better by the minute if you put your heart into it.

peace

Also, I think your colors on the first one are a little grainy, a higher resolution might help? Also, painting on a more neutral color like a medium grey or beige is important if you want your colors to come out right. Or if you're going for an overall mood, use a medium color that suits what you are going for.
