I just started having this trouble with painter 8 like three or four days ago. When I try to choose a brush category with a oil type brush it says building brush catagory then crashes. Next time I open painter up and choose the category it crashes. It even does this with the default oils catagory.

My Machine:
1ghz p3
384mb ram
4x5 acecad acecat flair Tablet

Maybe you can try deleting the Brush file (if I remember well it is brush.brs) that is inside the default folder (i.e.: c:\program files\Painter . Do not mistake it with the Brushes folder.

This file is recreated at start if you delete it...It is fine to erase it from time to time to optimize the program...

Hi,

Don't delete a file with the extension .BRS because that's a brush library file for pre-Painter 7 versions.

The file you may want to delete is the Pre-built Brush File found in the following folder:

Corel > Corel Painter 8 > Brushes

In Painter 7, it's found in:

Painter 7 > Brushes

In Painter 6 it's found in the main Painter 6 folder.

Delete this file after each Painter session if it's become large and Painter will regenerate it in the next Painter session.

I've deleted the prebuilt brush file about 10x... it still doesnt work

Is the brush category or brush variant that causes Painter to crash one of the default brush categories or brush variants, or is it a custom brush category or brush variant?

If it's a brush category or brush variant that was installed with Painter, after you open Painter, and before doing anything else, go to the Brush Selector menu and choose Restore All Default Variants.

If that doesn't work, before you open Painter the next time, go to your file manager and, in the problem brush category, highlight and delete all of the brush variants for which the file name is preceded by "c_".

These are the cached variants associated with any brush variant you've used and they store temporary user settings. When they're deleted (which is what should happen when you use Restore All Default Variants), only your temporary user settings are gone. The default variant remains as it was when Painter was installed.

If it's a brush category or brush variant that either you created or one that you downloaded from the Web, there may be something wrong with it. Try deleting that brush category or brush variant, then download it again (or if it's one you created, try creating it again).

Also delete the Painter.ssd file (Windows) or Painter Script Data file (Mac) before opening Painter. That's the Scripts library and it is one of the Painter files that frequently becomes corrupted. Painter will generate a new, empty Scripts library the next time Painter is opened.

If none of this works, and you're using Painter 8, insert the application CD and run the Repair option to correct corrupted files. (You'll see the option to Repair when you insert the CD and begin the Install procedure.) Just make sure Repair radio button is checked, then click the Next button and follow the prompts.
