Okay, we've decided to allow images in signatures for a while, to see how they go.
Signature image rules:
. They must be made from your own art
. No taller than 40 pixels
. No wider than about 300 pixels
. You can have animated gifs, but keep the filesize in the 2kb-10kb range
. Nothing of an inappropriate nature _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

I saw the signature in the Halloween thread.
Guess that was why you wrote the announcement?

Why would anyone complain? It's an art forum after all. I should think eveyone would want to be able to promote their work through a discrete signature image. I know i sure appreciate it.
Thanks, Sumaleth ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________

don't want to be an ass, and i know that it was written on the stone plates that god gave to moses that there won't be avataras on sijun, but i think 60X60 avatars is a better solution. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

I agree with ODD there. Would be nice if these avatars matched the sijun theme too... but thats just a dream. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

Still thou avatars and Signature-pictures can be very distracting, I have seen this in different Quake forums where the avatar pictures is like 500+ pixel, so I am glad you restricted the size in here.
Neff, I think drmonkey mean the color scheme here in the forum.
ok later

The reason people would complain is because it slows down the load time of pages ( especially if people abuse the space, so it's good Suma put a limit on the size ) and because it can be distracting from the art that's posted...
I don't really mind either way as long as they are kept small and discreet. |

40 px... that's tiny.. bah gotta edit it...
but hey, this is a nice addition
since we're artists here, i think it'll be easier for us to blend stuff into the forum colours _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

Sorry, im absolute no friend of this decission.
Best example are those moving eyes in this signature-pic above. Just get by far too much attention, it disturbs to watch the more important things.
I have no IRC/ICQ/EMail-Sounds(*ohoh*), but those tasks blinks in the taskbar to tell me there is something new. But if there is too much moving jumping blinkin in the browser, im not able to see them as quickly anymore.
Also, especially those signature-pictures disturb while scrolling down the "speedpainting-thread" or so, every second picture will be an "uninteresting one".
Avatars are on the side, thats ok, but signature-pics are everytime between and get by far too much attention this way - while i only like to watch the NEW paintings.
And the last point of course is the download-time. 10kbs are imho by far too much. set the maximum at 4kb because people dont tend to minimize the amound of kb you have to load, as long as it is not necessary.
Well, i have dsl, thats not my personal problem, but there are ENOUGH people around here have only a modem or ISDN or something other slow.
And the last and best argument is "Why?, the forum is perfect as it is" If you want to change something, normally YOU have to have the better arguments, right!? _________________ Lars Gtze

What is it good for? I absolutly agree with duracel. At home I only have a modem and loading some threads is a pain yet, without these signature pics.
I would also abolish the img-tag but I fear for my life suggesting this . But think one moment about the amount of traffic caused only by the speedpainting-thread. _________________ *** Hi! I'm a signature virus! Copy me into your signature to help me spread! *** |

Its advertising. Sigs are great as long as Size is kept in check. If this is an Issue that there is enough support against I found a php mod that would enable each user to view or not view others signatures if an Admin wants to install it.

I think I'm gonna have to go with Duracel on this one... Mainly because extra images are distracting. (I've got a cable modem, so loading isn't a problem for me, but I kno what it must be like for others.) I've been on some forums with obnoxiously large sigs, so I am very appreciative of the size limit. Still, I think small avatars work better for putting personality into the forums, but overall, I think that since this is already an art forum full of expression, we don't necessarily need extra pictures. If the sigs stay, then I'm glad their small, if it's changed to avatars, then make sure they are kept at a decent size, but I've never really felt the need to have either on an art forum. _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |

I know it has been brought up already just by reading the previous post but I will echo what has probably been said. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD LOARD NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I HATE (emphasis on hate) image signatures. I think there dumb, distracting, and further bog down my already slow 26.4k connection.
It doesnt take a little image for me to visit someones site, there art will be advertisement enough.
Besides, it makes the forums look like a room full of newbies that have to rely on flashy images to catch your attention.. _________________ Kevin Moore

I'm going to suggest to Dhabih that he should install it.
Unfortunately it almost means he'll have to upgrade the forum, and it doesn't look particularly easy to install. Not sure what sort of time frame we're looking at. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

every mod/hack requires adding few text lines in few files. it Takes few minutes max and is damn easy... Making a custom theme was WAY harder/ more time consuming thing.
Just add it to the todo-list.
EDIT
the mod cow suggested is only for signatures here is a link to a sinature/avatar mod
http://phpbbhacks.com/viewhack.php?id=1804
while we are talking about board upgrades i just want to show few hacks that i think would be helpful , i don't request to intall them, just want to show them
Advanced Quick Reply Hack (one click less in order to post a reply)(there is a demo lik in right top corner)
http://phpbbhacks.com/viewhack.php?id=586
Gender Hack (it's helpfull like the "location" field in the profile)
http://phpbbhacks.com/viewhack.php?id=182
Buddy/Ignore/Disallow List (you were asking if someone can write it while there is already such mod)
http://phpbbhacks.com/viewhack.php?id=1274
Member No. (I think you forgot to instal it while changing the host)
