Im trying to find models for the class i'm in(animation) Does anyone here knows how much I should pay per hour for a model?
I'm paying 300 Norwegian Kroner. that should be..umm..40$dollars
(4800 yen or 1250 rubles or 301 african Rands) Wink
Is this too much?

Hey, spoog Demon, I just looked through the speed-paint. And I see that you post a lot of life-drawing. How often do draw life? And I can't help but noticing that the enviroments looks very much like a home. Do you hire your own models?

- Godwin..just do it Wink It's tons of fun.
And some people really acts strange when they are naked. So it can be more of a personality study sometimes.

good work, all of you.

stein, your stuff is so impressive.
I am not sure what kind of prices that are paid at my school to the models but I can check with my school if you want me to stein.

I made a 20 minute sketch during coffe break, the ref was a stuffed Eagle which is in the window at my school. I hope it counts as life. a 2B pencil was used.

Your models are well paid. I think the ones at my school get 1/2 that or less an hour. However, if you have good models I imagine it's worth the cost.

first portrait class is a while:

What sort of schools are you guys going to to get this awesome lifedrawing training? Are these evening classes local to you, or are these art colleges? I have to see what uni I wanna go to in under a year now, and there are seemingly few which practice/teach the basics of drawing, and painting. info appreciated : )

Great stuff everyone!

Uh my charcoals suck.
(edit: she has dreadlocks, that's why the hair is strange)

Fred: I'm not sure if my opinion counts, but the impression I have is that good life drawing teachers are hard to find. At least here in Finland where technical skill is not valued much, but personal style instead. In my opinion, it would be a lot easier to learn if one had some knowledge on gesture and construction before starting.

I'd recommend you buy some books, Glenn Vilppu's Drawing Manual is good. I'm sure there's others as well. By learning some basics yourself, I think, you'll have a good start when taking any classes. Even if they don't teach the basics well, you can still use the opportunity to study on your own.

Wow. The drawings on this thread are fantastic. Here's the best I can come up with for now...
The top drawing is of a friend of mine, the bottom two are from Life Drawing classes.

Damn we gots some serious talent on this forum. Smile

Here is one I did useing a gessoed board and a flat piece of silver. I highly recommend trying this because drawings look awsome when they are done this way, but it's difficult. There is no way to erase.

And heres on in crayon.

Some of the studies on this threads are very original writing signatures. Next Saturday I am going for another life drawing session over at the Art Link. $2 /hr is pretty cheap and leaves no excuse for me.
(PS) these are 20 minute studies

Mikko K:

Heh, I made this at the same class:) You are right about a good life drawing teacher, we dont have them much in finland, not in our school at least. At the 2001 and 2002 fall we had one better teacher, that gave good critics. This one we are having now... I don't understand anything she says Smile

No one really taught me any drawing, most studying was done as a kid when I drew my grandparents, and later at our schools life drawing classes and reading some anatomy and drawing books ofcourse. I realy shoud(and should have) study lots more, to make as great work as others are doing here with those scetches.

crossposted, sorry, but I like this one because I have so much trouble with making a line drawing attractive and accurate that I was happy with this because the model was very delicate and beautiful and subtle and I think I actually got some of that with line. I am ususally hiding behind value or something like that.

Varnum, too good! I sit and look at your drawings for quite a while, seeing how they work. Thanks for posting them.

Spooge,I have same problems as you with line art.
I plan not to add shading but I do it all the time..hehe mostly because I feel lack of constrasts of bigger shapes, not just line.
But I've found that the EDGES rule can be also applied in pure line drawings
and in makes them more interesting and fresh(especially lost edges).

Stein,

I draw at a session that takes place in the Baldwin mansion. The Baldwins owned most of the island here and grew a sugarcane and pineapple empire. The house is huge, and has been converted into an art center of sorts. We draw in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

The model is payed 10 bucks an hour, which is Really low, I have tried to get it raised. They are taking advantage of a lot of people who living the hippy lifestyle, and it has ruined the market. Tough getting good models on that wage.

It is funny, most of the people there kinda raise their noses at my drawings (they stink of the illustrator!) Most are into more expressive styles, and sometimes I wonder why the model is needed for their work.

Pawel, yes, I sometimes play with this, but it looks too much like illustrators drawings from the 60s if you do it too much, imho. it is a good thing to think about, though.

10 dollars for models? geez, that's terrible.
about that illustrator thing, i get that feeling everytime i go to drawing sessions in soho or to other art schools in the area, full of new york city hipsters and old folk too embarrassed (or cheap) to go to strip clubs.

most of these were quickies done on the subway home from work.
