Greetings,
I looking for an artist to make some graphics for a new puzzle game in development. The game is a hybrid between Out Of Order and Press Your Luck/Whammy. Basically, I need a background layout, a few graphics, and some animations. I have only released one game so far and I designed the graphics myself. However, this time I find my art somewhat lacking. Right now I am only a small part-time game developer so payment would consist of a percentage of the game's profits. I am willing to negotiate on all financial matters and will sign a contract as well to insure your compensation.

If you are not interested in helping me out but can point me in the direction of an up and coming graphics artist looking to be part of making a video game please let me know.

I thank you for your time,
Tommy

As and avid gamer and great lover of puzzels and riddles, your offer intrigued me right up until i got to:

Not to be pessimisstic but if the game bombs or your small part-time company folds, then what? Contracts are all well and good, but they can easily be broken and it's often too time consuming and expensive to go to court over them.

Now please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be mean or rude, but as a freelance artist, I see these kinds of "help me create my -insert idea here-" posts all the time. Most often they are requesting flat out free work with possibility of payment based on a bunch of "ifs" but offering "part of the profits" comes in a close second and is just as shaky a grounds for payment as no payment at all.

I know you state on your web-page that you want to make great games, not money. But if your games are great then the money should be coming naturally. You would have far more success in finding good talent to help you with your designs by saving up some of the profits from your current product and offering that up-front and have a contract to protect your investment. As a company, you'd have a stronger case to take to court if the artist fell through than a freelancer would have against you if you failed to pay.

Even if you can only offer $50-$100 for the job, you should at least be able to offer something more tangible for the artists time and effort. Otherwise i am afraid your call for artists/designers will go unanswered or you will wind up getting work of a lesser quality which may hurt the popularity and sales of your game.

What could they say about payment that would satisfy you?

In all honesty, I would rather people looking for artists make a post for a call specifying what type of portfolios theyd like to review, then contact the artists they are interested in with an offer to do the job and discuss the pricing then.

But by far the most professional way to do an art call is to make a post with a link to the job opportunity on the company's webpage. That page should have information regarding pay and instructions for submitting a portfolio for review. The company can then browse through the portfolios and contact the artist(s) who are best suited to handle the contract.

See, the thing is, if people would make these art calls like they were hiring an employee, then they would be far more likely to get reliable and talented artists who could create exactly the kind of art they need when they need it. But when they treat it like it's a part-time hobby then they will only get part-time hobby artists that are more likely to flake out halfway through the job and leave the company in a pinch.

I am a professional artist. I do professional work. And I am always looking for new opportunities to expand my portfolio. But I want to do it by working with other professionals whose credits will look good on my resume. Wink

Cool!
Copy that text too and paste it with the rest the next time.
Ok? Wink

It always sounded as if the lines about payment were the only thing that bothered you.

Ok?

Mr. Green One step ahead of you! I realized as soon as i wrote it, that it was worth hanging on to. Hopefully, if i keep working on it, i will wind up with the perfect, polite, professional reply.
And with any luck it will be helpful enough that no will mind me cutting and pasting it over and over. Rolling Eyes
