First off, this is awesome. I love the architecture and subject matter.
The only real crits I have is the lighting and/or focus of the picture. It's obvious what the focus is supposed to be..and the value difference definately draws the eye there...but the lighting is still really subdued..and the area of focus is very small. Also, the lights on the buildings in the far background seem really dim. I know you don't want to distract the viewer, but it just seems odd. |

fukifino,
Thanks. Yeah I agree, I was purposely trying to have it very subtle. I did not want the typical glowing city look, maybe it doesn't work without the glow? It is at good place to go back in and start turning on some lights. I'll probably give this a try later. Thanks for the crit. _________________ Scott Robertson

Cool I really like the lil people
And the shadwos they cast.
Did you originally do that in a bigger resolution? I'd guess so.
I have a question. Since you are pro-conceptartist 'n stuff do you still constuct these scenes. Or do you work freehand mostly.
I hope you'll say the sketch for this is insanely full of guidelines.

AMAZING! I love it.
I love the background and the not-so-subtle-more-detailed-thingie.
They jst don't go so well together IMO. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

I like what you're trying to do there. There's something really nice about night-lighting that we don't often get to see in drawn art.
It'd be a shame to see you start adding big lights, although your feeling that something isn't quite working is probably right. Putting a finger on the problem isn't so easy though.
I tend to suspect the problem might be that craft. There's something about it's lighting that doesn't quite fit into the envirornment. Perhaps the shadowed sides are too bright? It might work if it was almost a silhouette, with only the underside surfaces catching any serious light.
I think it would also be worth joining that landing pad to the structure behind it by a walkway or something - just to help us place it in the scene. It feels a little out of place or something.
Maybe those will give you some ideas. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Another thought:
The camera position may be working against it too. It's this HUGE construction, but we're up so high that we completely loose that sense of size. And it doesn't feel as though we are watching the scene from any particular place, we're just kinda up there. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Thanks guys.
Sumaleth,
Yeah I agree the ship got to light and it looks to be a bit cut and paste or something. I'll try and loose some of the surfaces and work the bottom lighting more. Reagrding the POV, yeah tough call, I wanted that floating above the scene feel but it does work against a frame of reference for the rest of the scene. So much to think about when doing these types of pieces!
Flp,
It started as a loose collage of stuff to find the compostion and then I threw in a bunch of perspective guidelines using paths once I established my horizon line. After that I left the lines on the top layer and set them to about 10% opacity while I painted/drew underneath them. _________________ Scott Robertson

A nice full composition. Very interesting to view, however, I'm missing any sense of texture. Perhaps it is just the reduced image, but everything seems to be made from the same material - like Plasticine...
Are you going to continue working on it? _________________ HonePie.com
