I am trying to get better at my drawing and I know I have to practice, alot. I am doing that but I have a problem with proportions. Is there any way to practice w/ getting the proportions better or will it just come in time??

Peace Smile

Hello and Welcome to Sijun Invisible_soul.

What AndyT said is very good, also, look up some anatomy books and some Cartoon books. Not sure what other people thinks of Cartoon books but I think they show an easy way to throw down some proportions.
By Cartoon books I mean how to do Cartoons or tutorial Cartoon books.
One thing that is good is too focus on one thing at the time, if you wanna teach yourself trees, sit down and look at how others have drawn the trees and then try out some for yourself. I tend to have the view that observation is the most important thing, the observation of other painters and drawers.
Ok I hope some helped, I have a Cold so maybe the above written just seems blurry.

Heres some links:

A new ref gallery which I also posted in the speed thread just minutes ago.

Manga style primitives building, check the tutorial section.

Andrew loomis section, check out Figure Drawing for all its worth. (Not sure if this one works anymore?)
hey AndyT, is Fineart closed?
http://www.fineart.sk

see you
Matthew

The links have been removed from Fineart.sk as far as I know..

But the sites were up again.

Creative Illustration doesn't work right now. Maybe it will be up again soon.
Maybe Successful Drawing will be down again soon. Who knows.

You can download "Figure Drawing For All Its Worth" there:

There is a type of sketching i learned about in my limited art education called "gestures" that i personally found immensely helpful.

I had started a reply earlier to try and explain the process of how to do them, then realised it would be much easier if i could show you. So i made a tutorial instead.

Click here to view the tutorial

Hopefully it will be of some use. Smile

Wow Wren, that's sort of the way I taught myself; great tutorial.

I went to Barnes and Noble and would buy anatomy books (Cyclopedia Anitomica is the best i think), portrait books, cartoon drawing books (the step by step ones I got from the time I was 7 years old; my mom was a progressive mother who encouraged me to draw and she bought me tons). Simple line drawings of things you see, memory reference and one book I grew up with was 'How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.' It was simple, easy and even if it wasn't your drawing style or preference it was still good training.
