"LePensky" Im glad you showed up here - this is my favourite thread while learning to use the digital brushes!
I hope you will continue...
"hedlamb" I like yours - have seen your name a lot but cant remember your pictures - have to take a clooser
look after posting this!
I like the glance of your eye and the colours. I also see a very liberating way to paint which is a skill I want to
gain. I still have such a stiffness when I work - Im really trying to get rid of that...
...perhaps this one is a start - a little bit less fearful way to paint

it was getting dark while drawing this so wasn't able to finish it. this one seems more accurate than earlier attempts in terms of likeness. likeness is good.
little question for you portrait artists: how do you measure? or none at all maybe? i guess some artists are so trained that they can draw from life with no tools at all.
but i still need some kind of way to measure my own face in the mirror. i used to build all heads with the construction method described by Loomis, but now, i only use that for faces drawn from imagination.
for self-portraits, usually i just use the space between the tip of a pencil and my thumb, and hold it in front of me. but i've also read about viewfinders(which i also use in difficult situations), and simple tools to transfer the angle of a certain line to paper. what do you guys use?
And most importantly, do you train your eyes faster if you use no measuring tools at all?

Probustion: The most common way is to use your pencil the way you described. A viewfinder is used for composition, not for measuring the proportions. The way I do it is to first draw in an approximate egg shape for the head, and then I put in the ear. From the ear you can then work out where the eyebrow and nose will be placed and from those the rest pretty much falls into place easily. But you should read http://www.goodbrush.com/misc/painting_lessons/sargent.pdf which I got off Craig Mullins' site. Might as well take advice from the greatest portrait artist there was right? |

"hedlamb" - my journey through sijun looking for your pictures was worth the effort really!! Youre great.
When capturing the expression of your own face you only take what is needed - I admire you for that.
I will be observant to your signature from now on...
"Probustion" When I look at all your selfportraits, there is no doubt that it is the same person.... I like
them all! Just go on!
You asked about measuring - I dont use anything but my own eyes and comparing my paintings and
drawings with the photo or what I see in the mirror...just again and again!! ...sometimes
Im lucky. But we are all learning and I try not to be so fixed with the likeness but to develop a
moore free style and try to progress in making pictures worthy of beeing called art!
"Drunken Monkey" very beautiful drawings with nerv in the lines. The first one to the left tell us all that you must be beautiful like a "Greek good", but they are all interesting to look at...MOORE OF THIS!

Bobuke, thanks. Personally, I feel I've so much to learn, and so far to go, this forum is one of the biggest sources, serving as a reminder of that endeavor. Very motivating. Hopefully in a year or so, we can both look back and say that we've improved. |

thx bobuke. i'm very concerned with likeness. it gives me great joy to see the portrait actually looks like me. but the facial features are so delicate that i often have trouble seeing the caracteristics of my own face. sigh...
i guess it's a good quality not to be easily satisfied. if i was i wouldn't try harder!
don't look too hard at this one or it's gonna spoil your day, i tell ya!

"wasssup"...thnxs! I appreaciate your joyous acclamation! That portrait of yours, so full of life....seems so easily
made and its you all right - no doubt!!! I really like the way you express yourself.
"headlamb" I really hope youre right We are all struggling with our progress but even when youre a beginner you
sometimes do great job - and now you have done it again and I love it - I hope you dont mind
"swarm" Ive been following you for a while and I like your style - its something special really - this last one has a
very sensitive expression but the one I like best is the lady in the hat with the wonderful exciting look!!
"probustion" youve made a really beautiful portrait this time and your huge eye i Speed Painting Thread emmidiately
inspired me to compress my selfportrait to just an eye this time.... But Im sorry that I cant show it under the same
thread as you did!!!
Here I go...

Yes. At all levels, you have to continue to push yourself. Art, of any form, is a never ending attempt to better your abilities and knowledge. I'm somewhere in the middle, not beginner, nor guru, so I'm kinda of stuck in a vacuum. But, I'm still a "pup", so all the things before me, only makes me want to try harder.
Make an oath to draw at least for 30mins or more, a day, from life, everyday. My job affords me to do this, so I often don't even have to draw when I get home, but I do, because art is personal, to me. I have a ways to go, but in eagerness, I will. |

....I never thought you were a beginner, "headlamb"!
I took your adwise to draw from life everyday and made a quick portrait of my son today, and I will go on -
Graphit on paper. Perhaps I will post it in Speed Painting Thread.
I mostly paint my portraits from mirror now but even if use a photo I think it would be no fun to use it
as a layer under the painting as Ive understood that many people do here. But it is usually very easy to see -
even if the artist dont think so !
Well, Im so tired....still not inough to stop me from painting!
Never mind its another try to make a selfportrait anyway!!

This was my second attempt at doing a photoreal type picture in photoshop. I just snapped a picture of myself in the bathroom (hence the bad contrast) and used it as a reference for this. I like how it turned out, but the hair is kinda weak.

nice swarm, great use of the paper in that one.
a quicky just this morning. I had an accident when shaving today, so the whole beard had to go. this is a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of my naked chin.
