OK, finally settled on the final scale and such. Spent a few hours tonight cleaning up the sketch, blocking in some parts and starting to work on the main body.
This is really my first true color painting...it's an interesting experience. And I know the colors are a little too warm right now..I'll tone them down later.
Here's the original concept sketches:

Since the distance from the camera to the bush on the bottom right is about the same distance and height as the figure on the left so I perceive that this guy is about 2 feet tall. If all the other figures are two feet tall I'd say they are proportional with the perspective.

Or maybe it's a really big bush.
But yeah, that bush was pissing me off too. The problem is that the picture doesn't go up high enough...if I scale the mech properly he's going to be half off the frame...I like his placement in the overall picture...I think maybe if I pushed him back to about halfway between the 2nd and 3rd figures, and kept the size he's at now (essentially doubling the scale of all the figures in the scene) it might be more accurrate. That just puts him so far back, but I guess he'll still have the same presense. It's just going to be hard to fit him in, as the ground area there is a little more cluttered...
Anyways, thanks for the comment. I'll try to tweak it some more. |

Worked on it for a couple more hours tonight. Added some more detail to the torso (still needs a lot of work) and blocked in 3 of the limbs. I'd do the last, but I gotta run out!

I noticed while scrolling that the image looked better if you crop out the bottom of the image from the stump of the closest tree on the right. An added bonus the small bush turns into mere branches.
just an idea,

ahh so this is what you were talking about
i think it's going pretty well, and maybe jost's idea could work
though i think the mech's 'pose' is sorta strange, maybe the left arm with the cannons is stretched out too far left, it looks as if the mech is looking for a big hug with arms stretched wide open, nothing wrong there, it is a possible pose, it's just strange _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

Jost: Hmm, you may very well be right..just tried it and it did look a little better without being able to determine what/where that bush is.
Godwin: Yeah, the arms are sort of spread in a "hug me" pose I suppose. I had originally just figured he was sorta scanning the area...keeping one gun trained where he was going while turning to examine an area off to the side. It's my first attempt at drawing/designing a mech, and I already learned a lot (like I missed actually giving it a torso pivot point, hence the sort of last minute addition of that line in the torso area..hehe). Thanks for the advice!
I think I'm goign to try to rework the texture to make it more smooth. It looks too much like something soft, rather than hard smooth painted metal.
Thanks guys! |
