i dont have a pad or such, i just use my old 2-key mouse to paint, and sometimes, if i m lucky, i got nice things out, but most of the time i screwed up. just wonder if anyone actually know which soft goes best with mouse, dont say photoshop or painter, when u use a mouse to draw, they suck and get stuck.
here s one of my painting(2 hrs with da damn mouse):
i m no pro, so if this thing let u down, not my fault...well, u could say it is my fault. _________________ --------------------------

you might want to check out merkat's site: http://www.merekatcreations.com/
he used a mouse for most of his amazing paintings
and was on this forum every now and then a longer time ago.
and, yes, photoshop is usable with a mouse as well
-ever wondered what the steps/fade thing was all about? |

Search the forums for Chiani. She works with a mouse and either PS or Painter, and her stuff is really, really good. Either practice a lot, or save up US$100 and get a tablet. |

I guess it's just a question of how serious you are. |

Yep if you're serious, DON'T buy a Playstation 2, or any game console for that matter...biggest time waster in the world. Time that could be spent perfecting your craft.
Take this from someone who wasted a lot of time on video games.
Honestly, $100 is well worth the tablet. It will take you a little while to get used to, but as was said before this post...you won't want to go back afterwards. |

There are tons of photorealistic paintings made with just a mouse. However, very few serious people use a mouse.
There are 4 things mouse users suffer from:
1. Pain
2. Smaller size pictures
3. Stupidity.
4. Longer time at painting
Originally most digital art work was made with mouse useing PIXELING. But, now we have TRUE COLOR and VERY HIGH RESOLUTIONS.
Also, if you don't pixel then the mouse can be used for coloring but it is almost impossible to sketch with it. So you could scan, and color with the mouse in photoshop but that is really just a waste of time if you are serious.
if you are serious then sketch with a pencil or learn oils or something until you can buy a tablet.
well, I actually I did get pretty good with sketching with a mouse. I was really stupid though.
To use mouse then you must learn to ZOOM.
Actually, I still do minor things with mouse like selections because it is still easier for me to do that. I wish I could use my PEN as well as a MOUSE is as selecting and navigating programs. |

I am serious about my art (i get paid for it after all) and I use my mouse.
I don't suffer from hand cramps. My mouspad is positioned so that my wrist stays straight and i move the mouse with whole arm for long strokes, and my fingers for short ones.
It's takes no more time to paint with a mouse than it would with real paint (and no drying time or mess to worry about besides)
My pictures are no smaller with a mouse than the ones i draw by hand. If anything, my paintings are larger than the original sketches! Granted, i usually scan in my sketches and paint right on top of them, but that's really because i've never learned how to paint so it's easier for me to have my sketch as a guide. But i know that Kay Allen builds all of her paintings from scratch on the computer with only a mouse. With her help i am learning to do the same.
And i certainly don't consider myself stupid!
Truth be told i HAVE a Wacom. i got the only one i could afford (a Graphire2) and I HATE it. I seriously doubt that a more expensive one would be any better or that my old computer could handle one anyway.
And i like to think i am sucessful enough at painting with a mouse that i really don't need a tablet. But i'll let you all be the judge of that. Here is the first digital painting i ever did:
there are others in the works and some finshed ones sill under NDA but this is a pretty good sample of what i do with a mouse. I am satisfied with it, so i doubt i'll be wasting money on another tablet anytime soon. _________________

She's good and thats a nice painting. But still, I think you should listen to me:
Don't bother with the mouse!!! You are only crippling yourself.
Sure some cripples can run! I've seen some enter the Olympics too.
---
But I would appreciate some tutorials on anything you are learning.
I use the Wacom 12z12. It is slightly big but it works good. Again, if you just want to color then you can use a mouse. Id suggest the 12x9 now as it is a quite big.
Its also easier to use a mouse if you are just doing minor things. But, getting smooth line drawings with a mouse or sketching is not the wisest thing to do.
If you make lots of selections you can paint with just gradients and get good works. But if you want to try to be spontanious and have ALL options then yuo MUST have tablet.
btw.. I did several of my first works with just a mouse

http://light1.home.mindspring.com/copies/workinprogress.jpg

But, I still think I was stupid. Anyway, I have to make some nice fantasy works, and quit wasting my time here. |

Just because you need a tablet, i don't think it's fair for you to insist that EVERYONE needs a tablet. You said before that mouses make for smaller image sizes and I noticed that your pictures are indeed very small. But that's not the fault of the mouse, that's the result of your working size. The image i posted above is the reduced web version of a 5.5 X 11 INCH painting. What's more, the original sketch was half that size and it was a sketch not some drawing that i merely "colored in".

Selections? Gradients? I have no idea what you are talking about. I use the mouse the way i'd use a paintbrush. There are no "selections" or "graidents". In fact, i've only recently started using layers. I just don't understand this idea that tablets are a necessity anymore than i would someone saying all artists HAVE to use oils instead of acryllics.

It may not be the wisest thing for YOU to do, but for others of us, it's not a big deal at all. I've always been of the mind that tools do not make the artist. That a truely skilled and talented artist can get as much detail out of a stick of charcoal as they can a mechanical pencil. It's just a matter of skill and knowing how to use your tools. But that's just me. I wouldn't dream of imposing my ideas on someone else...
And i'm also not trying to say that tablets are bad or that they are cheating somehow. I think the concept of tablets is wonderful and if i could afford a larger, better model i might even like them myself. All i am trying to say is that a tablet isn't any better than a mouse when it comes to the quality of the art that is produced. The quality of the image lies solely within the skill of the artist regardless of what tools he/she is using. _________________

I'll agree that good art can be produced with a mouse. Chiani is a great example. However, the majority of the art I see that is made with a mouse is just plain bad, and almost all of the artists who I think are good use a tablet. In addition, my own work improved greatly when I got a tablet. I would say that any serious digital artist owes it to himself to at least check out a tablet. Head to the shop and buy one, and if you don't like it, return it. At least that way you can use your mouse knowing that it's the best tool for you. |

Some tools are definitely easier to learn than others. And in much the same way that acryllics are easier to use than oils for many artists, so too are tablets easier than mice for most.
But no one should ever think that they have to have a tablet to make great art because it simply isn't true. Great art doesn't come from tablets or software or oils or pencils. It comes from paitence and practice and skill. _________________

I bought a tablet and can't get used to it.
If I don't stop drawing/painting I'll try it again (as soon as I find the stylus ).
It's the pressure sensitivity that makes the difference IMO.
