I'm starting to try to draw faces.

Could someone tell me what the major problem with my attempt at drawing the (right) Dude's face? I see a lot of mistakes, but I'm wondering what someone that can actually draw would select as the major thing that is wrong (other than it actually doesn't look like the original at all Razz )

Same thing for the sketch of john goodman, before I go further.

Thanks, I hope someone help me and reply, and sorry for the bad english.[/img]

It looks ok at first glance ...
I'm not sure but IMO the head should be tilted more.
I think the nose is too long.
Darks should be darker! What pencil(s) do you work with?
And the beard and his hair style don't look wild enough.

Also try to draw the eyes more accurately (shape and highlights).

You can experiment with the digital version.
Try to fix the problems you see by moving selections for example.
Like that you can test if you were right or not ...

Btw. is that Keith Szarabajka?

Hi Papi

I am new here, too and I don't know if I can actually draw.... but I hope that my comment will help you:

I think that your main problem is the perspective. The left part of the face does not fit to the right one cause they seem to be drawn from different perspectives... if you know what I mean... if you look only on the left part of Dude's face (and cover the right one) you'll see that there doesn't seem so much "wrong" than if you take a look at the whole pic.

I hope, I helped you.... Smile

Bye,
Geraldine

Thanks a lot for your comments Very Happy I'll try that portrait again and take those into account...I have to admit I didn't really see those mistakes, or not in the same way...

AndyT : no it's Jeff Brifges as The Dude in The Big Lebowski (great movie, you should see it).
Also the contrast on the scan is lower than the original.

Nochmal danke beide fr die hilfe.

And the main thing, compositing the whole drawing before digging into detail. Seems that youve started to draw the Dude without really first positioning his head correctly, head is tilted more than his eyes and so on and so forth. You know, square head, eyeline, the mid-line of the face... My english isnt good enough to know all the right words for these things but I guess you catch the drift... His forehead isnt in the same position as the eyes and that is, to my knowledge, from the lack of compositioning.
