First Post here, been lurking for a little while. saw some of zhuzhu's LotR paintings and was inspired.

From inspiration to final save about 1hr

havnt done much digital art, this is prolly one of just a couple pictures i actually have finished, so be kind Wink

c&c welcome, its how we grow/improve right?

(with ref)

(edit: im not really happy with the contrast, as in there's really not enough for my liking. OTOH Saruman is supposed to be slightly 'washedout' in which case i suppose lower contrast and a slightly lower saturation might have improved the overall look....hmmm...

*goes off to fiddle with the pic*)

edit2: fiddled a bit, fixed the hair on the left so it 'hangs' and doesnt hug his face, umm...added staff shadow...general improvements in hair shading and overall stuff...

Craig??? Damn you man...I care you fool. Hehe

Hey listen thank you for posting acrylics now i see where i can go with this medium. I bought a computer for 3400 Canadian it's a Mac g4 1.25/80 ghz Dual Screen 17" and 19" tube (lacie). Now i just need the software and i'm back painting. I'll post my stuff so you can give me some advice.

Can you draw a still life maybe some flowers and a nice looking crystal jar?
If you do that can you cut it in too 6 images? Step by step? I know you've done digital tutorials but how about a traditional sketch?

I know it's all about the middle values and the strength of a drawing on a good piece of water color paper. But i still can learn from it. Thank you Sir. Mullins

p.s What printer should i get? Oh and what's a good scanner to have? I'm builing my little home made studio with a little bit of sugar on top. =)

i have a question for Craig too: the last image you posted, is it an oil? and which colours did you mix to get those skin tones? my guess would be: white, red, burnt umber? there's probably a little green and blue in there too, hehe. sorry, i'm new at oils. just wondering bout these things.
thanks!

done from head. inspired by Cos' B/W art though

Ah-ha! Bigger brushes! Good job, Matthew. That's what I'm talkin about. Define his hood with those same strokes. Use the small brushes for detailing, etc. When you make sketchy lines like that it shows a lack of confidence in the form you're trying to achieve. Just go for it with big, hard edges, and then work INSIDE those edges.

Damn it Sparth, Mullins, now I want to paint. I've to try harder...draw longer, and draw more.

Playing around with tools.

spooge demon: You really have something going with the first picture in your first set and the first 2 in your second set. I mean they are all good. But the ones I pointed out in particular really stuck out. Very reminiscent of Sargent... Your drawing skill has improved immensely. Thanks for sharing these. I'd prefer these over your digital work anyday.

Cut my finger on some sheet metal at work. 3 stitches. Can't bend my finger to hold pen right.

Anyway, that's my lame-ass excuse for this:
