Looks great so far, but I think the difference between the sketch and the finish that's possibly contributing to your frustration is the slight angle change you've done between the first and second versions of the background ship. Notice that in the sketch, the ship is pointing slightly to the right and down....sort of a threatening or focussed attitude toward the foreground ship. In the finish, its "attitude" is slightly leftward. It seems less "aware" of the foreground ship, in other words, there's less interaction between the two.. If the inage is digital, try a second layer with the bacckground ship form the sketch over the more finished one. _________________ Nick Jainschigg

That is one difference.
The other differences are that you have the most near ship cut off in the sketch, and this makes the composition more edgy and increases anxiety.
The other thing is that in the sketch you have directional lines that add to the sense of movement, and you don't have these obviously in the painting.
You need to study some painter that is good with conveying movement and action in a more polished painting. I can't think of any examples to give you. I'm not sure how you could get the movement of the directional lines in the painting. You might try bouncing some light sources around, and reducing the fog. Increase shininess too. Use a backlight maybe |
