I think it's excellent.

There's something about it's beek, the part just below the eye, that doesn't feel right. Light seems wrong. Also, I really like the beek, but what would happen if you removed most of the part along the top of the specular? Maybe it's just the specular that looks 'dis-angled' to me. If I don't stare at it, there's no problem.

For the hand furthest away (it's right hand), I think you should try and not curve it so much, and if you go with this angle, maybe try and illustrate the depth some other way, because they can be seen (I did first) as being in the reverse order (i.e. index is the furthest away). From what I can see, the fingers should come more towards the viewer, but they seem warped backward. It's just the three fingers, the rest of the hand works really well.

The only other part I think looks a bit weird is the bell (not because it's poorly made, I just didn't care for the shape), and some of the branches (the right one especially. But it should look fine when you colour some depth into it). I've never been in a bird-cage like this before. Smile

It has a great sense for clothing itself, that's for sure.

Btw, have you seen Mel Milton's Dark Crystal thing? http://www.melmade.com and go to Gallery >Latest.

Nice detail and lighting on the robe. Really nice feel overall. Perhaps the fingers could be a bit more dynamic... they seem a bit rigid.

Great concept!

I worked on it some more, I pulled out the sleeve details to work on the folds. Let me know what you think!

Ah yeah the Skeksis, my favourite Race in The Dark Crystal movie.
That movie rocks. :)
I saw it the first time when I was little kid and re-saw it about a month ago, and yeah the Skeksis once ruled. :)
I think everything I drawed for a while looked like the Skeksis, indeed a powerful race.

Nice pic btw
see you
Matthew

I didn't know exactly where you were going with the 'interim' version, but this one is excellent. I think you could have it's beek lightened a bit, and I really like what you've done with the feathers at the bottom, the details on it's sleeve, birds (they're fantastic), etc. The only thing I can remark on is that maybe you should add more blue to your other shadows on the nearest objects, so it's more consistent. I'm really glad you added the structure to the right again, and I'm not sure if it being this light overall diminishes from the eerie mood, but that's up to you. Superb work. Smile

the newest version is excellent. great representation of the environment (my new fancy replacement for "background" Wink

one thing though, that i've seen in all these versions. it was partly addressed in the comment about how the hand seems reversed, and it's almost hidden from view in this last version, but i'll still point it out. the top hand (his right), the index finger is the longest, instead of the middle one. like i said, you can barely see it in the last version because of the smoke, but still. Smile

beautiful job otherwise. imaginative costume. neat creature, though I didn't last through all of the Dark Crystal, so I have no clue who that is. photoshop?

Gillespie-I used the interim version to go back and rework the folds, portions of the composition, and the color temperature relationships. I have discovered that for me I sometimes have to go back and obliterate what I've accomplished so that I can do even more. If I let certain portions become to precious, then those parts can bring down the picture. So that was what I was doing in the second one.

Ylla-that dang hand! Its painter 8. Anyone else here upset about the exclusion of custom palettes in painter 8?
