Hi folks!

Acouple of days ago we had kitchen fire at our house. the damage to the kitchen is not that severe because i saved saved it from goin up in flames!!!
...with my hand!!! stupid you say? yeah, for sure. i'm out of work untill my hand heals. ok here's how it happened: I wanted to make french fries and got the grease in one of those older pots and fired up the stove. The shit caught on fire and i tried to first gently pull it to the cool side of the stove, and then put a lid on it. welll! the stupid me (and i guess this was due to a bit of panic) not realizing that the boiling pot (being chiep) had stuck to the hot plate wile i pulled on it, and the hot flaming grease overflowed on my whole hand once it gave way rendering it useless for about a month or so. I got an appointment with the plastic surgeon tomorrow so he can assess the damage etc. I tell you people You have no idea what kind of pain i got from this. Anyways i feel bad now cause i can't paint draw or even wipe my ass properly. please feel free to cheer me up with your drawing hand mishaps and if you know anything about burns i need to know how bad it is???

thanx for taking interest

this is a picture of my hand 20 hours after thee incident yesturday taken by my mom at the emergency ward changing my bandages.

Using my incredible doctor skills I can tell you that you burned the shit out of yourself. I have no idea how long that will take to heal, but I imagine it'll be long enough to have you trying to draw left handed. If that gives you trouble, "draw" with your empty right hand a mirror image of what your trying to draw with your left. Most importantly, I hope that heals without complication. Good luck!

Damn... that looks horrible.

I know little about burns but I know the danger is getting the burnt zone infected, so be careful with it.

Hope you can heal it properly soon!

Burnt hand, yes I have done that. Almost as bad as yours. Third degree burn to the right hand. When I went into the emergency room the blister was the size of a softball, and the pain was equal to what it probably feel if there was a softball inside my skin!. You burn is a very bad one. Recovery depending on many things will be probably around two months. Although each person can and will heal at different rates. Hopefully there's no nerve damage. A nerve grows approximately a cm every month. So if damage was done you could expect up to 6 months, and even longer. Of course with the dead tissue still in place it's really hard to tell. A month recovery if it is only tissue damage is not unrealistic.
I also cut my left hand when I was three. Severed nerves in my left index finger. Had nerve transplant from my wrist done by a plactic surgeon. That was 39 years ago and this is the scar I have to remind me every day...
I still can't straighten out my index finger.

holy shyt thats a burn

i burnt my arm this one time but it wasnt nearly as bad as urs it just looked gross cuz a rubbed it against a super hot pot and all the skin was pushed and melted to form a sort of pile of dripping skin. But that was only first degree, im pretty sure. But it did smell really bad afterwards.

and this other time when i was about two i cut off the third digit to my right hand middle finger. Docs sowed it back on, but a so-called "calcium deposit"" formed so i have this big bump on top where the joint is. Luckily tho this is my right hand and not my left, and i can still use it as well as ever. i think.

but shit! That worse than any of those! Heh, have you tried peeling off all that dead skin? I know i would be if it wasnt too incredibly excruciating (which it probably is so dont try it) (unless it isnt too excruciating, then peel it all off and send us a picture of ur skinless hand. Ive always wanted to see what that would look like)

Shocked wow. Your hand is rotten.com material. Make a "burned hand" photo diary, like stinkymeat the guys over at thespark.net did.

Oh, and my symphaties. I broke a bone in my right hand some time ago in a drunken stupor. I also passed out in a toilet and got to be an involuntary life drawing model. Ohhh, the shame. The shame.

That looks familiar... I saved an elderly apartment complex in a similar way. I was at my dad's when I was 15(he was already fairly old), and I spotted a grease fire in a frying pan unattended in the kitchen. I rushed in, grabbed the pan, and moved then flipped it upside down in the sink to the left. The grease moved like a sheet up over my right hand, shrinkwrapping my thumb to the rest of my hand using my own skin. I really didn't think it hurt that much though - I made sure the fire was out, then walked into the bathroom and put it under cold water. After about 6 hours of having it under iced water I decided to go to the hospital, which didn't do anything. Eventually had to cut away the dead skin. Very nasty process. I had a hell of a time with my midterms that year because of the giant bandage. I was out of it for about 2 months.

yes...and try baking them at a high temp or broiling them even. They'll come out just as crispy but without all the greasy residue evrywhere (including in your arteries).

hi again.

thanks to everyone who has replied. And yes here in an update:

its now 9 days since i burned my hand and i can say i came a llllong way. As i write this my hand doesn't feel like i broke it anymore and i'm happy to say that i regained about 95 % of tyhe feeling in it. I gonna go back here a bit:
that friday when i went to see a plastic surgeon he decited that it was time to take the skin off and begin the heeling process. Well when the skin was taken off (not all of it but at least what you'll se in the pictures below) about 2 hours after that I began to have such nasty amount of pain that I think i begged to faint just to get out of it for a few seconds. Two Tylonol3 didn't help (tylenol 3 for those whoi don't know is a pain medication [tablet form] with codine that is used for bigger than normal pain controll), so i came back to the clinic to get something stronger. I was given a shot of something strong and went all numb for about 2 hours. I was then perscribed Talwin 50mg tablets wchich i'm told was the next level of paint control and was told to take it every 4 to six hours when the paint was severe. ...so i did and after four days i did ok but also with much pain and noticing that i developed an alergic reaction to it. My whole body wend into a really bad rush on the fourth day so the doctor told me to stop all the medication. I'm now just beginning to see a slight improvement and that its starting to fade but wholly shit did i ever scratch the hell out of it. So i guess i'm getting better because the antibiotics are done now, i'v stopped Talwin and the alergic reaction to it is fading. For pain i now take just one Tylenol3 a day everytime a nurse comes to my house to change my dressing. I have an appointment at the doctors tomorrow probably to cut away the rest of my dead skin mostly from my fingers. I'll beg him to postpone that untill after the weekend because my wife and i want to go to montreal for our honeymoon weekend. We'll see what he says. Other then that i'm in really good spirit and sooo looking forward to useing my wacom again. I would also like to thank all of you for commenting on this post and know that all your comments and suggestions have been or will be taken into consideration/ and or practice. I'll post pictures when i come back from montral in this thread here.

by the looks of it, you'll recover soon enough ... make sure to post the very first thing you draw after your hand heals.

when i was 13, i got burnt pretty bad by burning cooking oil... i was trying fry something in one of those deep friers ... i was heating up the oil (theres a lot of it... you need lots of oil to deep fry things =p) .. i got bored and decided to watch tv ... i also didnt realise i set the fire to 'high' when it should be at 'low'...

after about half an hour of watching cartoons and stuff i heard popping sounds in the kitchen and i saw this red glow coming out of my kitchen door, at that point i know im fucked.
Ran into the kitchen and half of it was burning... ran to the fire extinguisher (which was VERY near the fire) and tried to put the fire out ... everything went out cept for the deep frier, the oil was still burning fierce.
I thought the safest way to put out this fire was to carry the whole damned thing to the bathroom and pour a pail of water over it.

and thats what i did.. i placed the pot of burning oil in the corner of the bathroom, took a pail of water and BOOM !!!

next thing i know i was on the floor, the sink was broken and water was gushing out of the broken pipeline, the light was out, everything was black, there was glass and broken ceramics on the floor and my right hand up to my elbow hurts like fuck.

the next day, i saw this fire safety message on tv and it says never try to put out oil fires with water.

Man, that looks really bad. I'd be worried if it didn't hurt because it looks pretty much sick.

Keep taking photographs of it until recovery if you can....

I'd suggest learning to draw with your toes or mouth or left hand or something.

Man......... it sucks that you're comming our corner of the woods on your honeymoon in such bad shape :/ I hope you have a good time nevertheless and that the trip takes your mind off of things (fat chance). At least you'll be entertained !
Hmm the tip of your fingers is getting black... As for looking better......... I'm not sure but as long as the pain gets down !

Oh My! I can't believe how relaxed you seem with the whole thing. I don't think I'd be able to look at my own hand if it looked like that. The only serious injury I've ever sustained was getting hit in the head with the back of a rake, and I hated to look at my swollen eye, I guess I'm kinda squeamish. Anyway, I hope that heals up fast and fully, hang in there!
