My second Painter painting... this time I tried painting from a color photo; one of the publicity shots from Matrix Reloaded.
This is what it looked like after 2 hours:

dude thats slick!
I have two minor crits
1) the color scheme is lighthearted/warm (not necessarily a bad thing) I know you worked from a photo but the matrix is green-tinged, bleak, and cold.
2) neo has maybe a little too much of a babyface...like he looks too "soft" in the face ...does that make sense? maybe tough him up a little...
I love your handling of the reflections on trins outfit...great job.
I always like seeing matrix fan art... you captured their likenesses really well
yay for martin!

King: he told he painted from a photo, whats so busted about that.
nice image there.
A minor critque, I agree with animagic, about making neo's fave more tough, you might decreas the siz]e of his forhead a bit.
You might add a really subtle gloss to neo's glasses.

saying that you painted something from the reference when you traced in reality, is like saying you had sex last night when you were really only masturbating. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

I didn't trace it. I also didn't sample any colors from the original pic. I started from a quick pencil sketch, then adjusted the details as needed while painting.

I don't see what you're trying to defend now? Adjusting details as needed while painting doesn't mean placing the original reference over your image and making sure it's the exact same. You may as well go buy some tracing paper and a colouring book. I mean, if you've done a paintover, just say so.
I'm not here to cause beef, just to let you konw don't try to pull it off as your own work.
Sure you can use the picture for reference, but reference is different from tracing. _________________ girls like shining |

What are you talking about? I haven't done a paintover. I've never once placed the original reference over my image, not even after it was finished. I haven't done any tracing. I *did* spend over six hours painting the image, and since the time I was ten years old - nineteen years ago - I've spent a lot of time trying to learn to draw realistic people, so it shouldn't be that fucking surprising that my painting looks pretty similar to the reference pic.
This is just ridiculous.

wtf!? Seriously, don't you have better things to do?
You'd better be watchful of who you point your fingers at tilokani, trying to pull people down is not the way up if you ask me.
Martin, snygg bild. It's a nice reproduction but it's a little boring imo. Using reference is cool but there are a lot more things you can do with it. I know you can do something a bit more creative. _________________ It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice - Scooter |

It's a great copy, I really like it. I did the same with a pic of Lord of the Rings some time ago.
It's a good way to learn as long as you "know" what you copy.
Whatever people say aout tracing - it's not something bad.
Of course you will learn faster if you don't trace.
But as you said: you didn't trace. Absolutely okay
If you like doing copies do it - people may be rude....who cares |

Oh, I plan on doing more creative stuff than just copying photos. But I only just started using Painter, and I thought that copying a couple of photos would be the fastest way to learn how to use the program, and to learn to draw human skin tones.

All I have to say is Martin if you didn't trace it take the accusations as a compliment that you have managed to achieve an alomost perfect replica, if you did copy it then to yourself you'll always know thats all it is and it's your own satisfaction with the work which should really matter.
I saw the other picture as well now I have to say if that isn't a copy you are very talented in fact even if it is the rendering is still amazing. _________________ The Horror, The Horror |

Same dude who did piece...a lot of suspicion about it being a paintover, as well...and he has yet to post his reference photo for it. |
I didn't realize that anyone still thought that one was a paintover. It should be easy to show that it isn't, because with the first pic I didn't care if the proportions were 100% similar as long as the result looked like a photo.
Here's my reference photo, in its original size:
Compared to my painting there are many differences, like for instance the tongue and the position of the ear.

Holy cow guys. I know you guys can be harsh but SHEESH.
The title of the post wasn't "Hey, here's something that is original and interesting to look at". The guy is learning a specific program and setting his goal at closely replicating textures and color tones from real life.
Martin: I think you've done a great job. As you can see from the accusations of "paint over!" and "Tracer!" you've done a good job at replicating the detail of the original photo's. You did an excellent job with the textures, especially trinity's suit and the girl's tongue.
Keep up the good work, and don't let some dudes in the board get ya down. They just tend to only appreciate things with artsy roots. |

I agree. Good job on both. I wouldn't even care if you traced it... good coloring on the girl. Creative stuff is hard when you don't have any reference in your head... keep plugging dude. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

martin, i already posted a comment on the piercing girl thread in the wip forum thread, but since i liked it so much, ill post again. i personally think its great and i do not believe its a paintover or trace. i also understand your position and can identify because i also like to draw portraits and sometimes i spend weeks on a portrait to get perfection in replicating the proportions and the colors, and then people come to me and tell me that i've traced it or painted over the picture. at the beginning it used to make me very angry but after a while i just took it as a compliment when people honestly thought it was a photo or something. i never posted these drawings people said to me where photos on this forum though, because they were drawn a few years ago before i joined these forums. you can find them in my site though.
what i wanted to ask you was to explain again how you achieved the imperfections on the skin, because im trying to do the same thing with one of my portraits and it's coming out unrealistic. |

Well, I already wrote "The skin texture was made by drawing about 200 dots/blotches using burn/dodge, and then using the "add grain" brush to add pores/fuzziness", and I really don't know how to explain it in more detail. I could perhaps add that I used burn much more than dodge, and that I used "just add water" to make the dots smoother, but it should be pretty obvious what I've done if you look at the last two pictures here:

I hope that helps. I can't type much because I have this repetitive strain injury thingy, and typing hurts my hands.
