While we're waiting for the new Napster?
Free or not free, I don't care if I have to pay for it, but what I'm looking for is hard to find, mostly groups from the vinyl era. Any place like that?
By the way what's the best online radio station you've found? |

i use limewire and kazaa.
both are free downloads and work a lot like napster used to. and no paying for songs either. not sure how much luck you'll have with rare songs though |

Limewire and Kazaa both have Spyware.. if you remove the spyware from Kazaa it no longer works. Either use Audiogalaxy, as mentioned above, or Morpheus (http://www.musiccity.com) which uses Kazaa's network and a few others. |

There is ofcourse always the insane thought of going and buying the music, you know...
Just as in the 'good ole days'
Most artist are quite aware of copyright regarding their OWN work, why is music any different??!!
A bit pissy here
EDIT: Ahh, Steven doesn't care if he have to pay or not.....if you guys pay, then nevermind, haha...

I suggest morpheus. I prefer it since audiogalaxy has sometimes given me "server overload errors" and asked me to <dramatic pause> wait. Audiogalaxy doesn't allow searching for certain songs also.
Morpheus seems to be faster too...it's at www.musiccity.com |

Yeah, the issue isn't the money, I'd gladly pay more than average for these songs - still, I've already paid the respective artists for them once...
I'm looking for the songs from my old vinyl collection, now rotting in storage, most of them over 20 years old, which since I don't have an oldfashioned record player now I can't play anymore. Most of this music I can't find in the record stores. |

Audiogalaxy has a policy that basically means if they are close to getting in trouble for trading certain songs over their system, then they will remove the most used names to send the relevant song. But you can always get around that by searching for names similar but not exactly the same as the intended song...
Woah thats like double dutch or something *shrugs*.
Good luck. |

Morpheus/music city/kazaa certainly has the most users. But God only knows what they are sharing. Obviously nothing I want. Getting tunes I'm interested in is like pulling teeth from there.
Audiogalaxy hasn't really gone wrong for me. Sure they bar a few tracks here and there, but it's not usually a big deal. |

This is not exactly what Steven wanted, but visit Jesper Kyd page if you love soundtracks. I`m keen on soundtracks, especially ones for games. This guy has good stuff - he has written music for Messiah (the ambient ones not the Fear Factory pieces), Hitman (gosh, I live this game), MDK and much more.
By the way, how many of you listen to game soundtracks while working? I have to admit that except Brian Eno, Passengers and some other exceptions, my "music partition" is full of game and some film scores. |

Krauze, yeah, Jesper Kyd is pretty cool, I've been following his progress since he did the music for Scorcher (Anybody know that game ? Except faust ). He does some really unusual (and good!) stuff. |

IRC owns them all. thats all i say. i grabbed 20 albums two weeks (kickass albums that is) without even having to search.
hotline used to be good to, but free leech servers are disappearing.

Morpheus also has spyware!!! There is also a real risk of viruses being packed in the download of your file...many people I have heard have got viruses from downloading from morpheus including me!!! Just be careful ![](images/smiles/icon_redface.gif) |

I got Morpheus, seems to work ok for the kind of music I'm after (I'm over the hill, so it's 70's and 80's for me - can't beat Ritchie Blackmore on the Burn album for instance, talk about inspired...)
But when you mention downloading viruses, you don't mean inside mp3's right? They're just a variation of mpegs and jpegs after all... or am I wrong? I know Morpheus also allows downloading other files like software, maybe that's where you got the virus? (I hope?) |

since morpheous allows you to download exe files, you can get viruses that way. i dont think you can get them from mp3's or mpegs.
call me stupid, but what is spyware? |

I really don't think you can pack a virus in a jpg or mp3 or any image for that matter (or else, I'm sure some moron would have tried to do that here a long time ago).
Non-executable binary files are just read by an executable to retrieve binary data which is NOT executed, but rather used as data input into executed functions. It's impossible (or extremely highly improbable (unless you're dealing with an amazingly stupid software company to develop executable portions into a shareable file format)) to find a combination of software + binary data to actually be harmful to your computer or others. (unless some very specific binaries contain "executable portions" which is not the case of most data files such as videos, images, music files, etc.)

theres no (it's possible but the chances are so slim its pretty much no) chance you'll get a virus in an mp3 file. however almost all other file types can be used in conjunction with viruses, many used a lot less then othres, but techniqily it's possible. |
