I think it is kind of plain. With all due respect, it just doesn't do anything for me. _________________ Put a muzzle on her Turkish, before she gets bit. You don't wanna get bit, do you boy? |

ye i know itsnutin extravagetn, but I dint want to do a giant picture and it end up being crappy after doing alot of work, this is ment more for a test, and possibly somwhere on my home page.
All I need to know is what adjustments should be made, and how i can improve my future work.
Thanks for your time people. _________________ Visit glitterbugs Secret Forum |

It depends what sort of effect you are trying to create.
Certainly it would be useful to have light and dark contrast down the face reflecting the direction the light is coming from (top front). This would really help to define the face and give it some depth.
Perhaps also some shadowing and folds on the clothes, it really depends which way you want to take it. _________________ _____

I would like to have more different colors in the face and on the shirt, and I think you should add shoulders... |

oops i changed the image size so now it looks all pixily ( ill fix that now) the reason I didnt add shoulders is cause i wanted sumting simple, cause i want to use this for a main page and i have a good idea of how to make use of it.
So so far it seems that the biggest problem is with the shading. ok, i can fix that easily, it doesn take that long to do. I was doing this picture while with my friends anyway, got kinda distracted. well when i have the time ill go back a redo it.
Now is there anything else that i can do to improve this picture besides fixing the face's shading?
once again, thanks for your time people. _________________ Visit glitterbugs Secret Forum |

crits:
the facial anatomy is going to be part of the practice you'll be working hard at. It looks like you know one or two things, but those things don't want to be friends. Just draw from life and study anatomy (look into skulls and facial proportion especially). Cartoony and stylistic is one thing, but you have to know the basics before it'll ever work.
color wise, it looks like you used an 'out of the tube' pallete. This basically means that you chose 'skin color' because you were painting skin, and 'brown' because you were painting hair etc...next time try using color to create atmosphere.
Speaking of skin, try to 'chose' which colors are your highlights and shadows. Using the darken/lighten tool has been on the digital art cardinal sin list for at least 3 years now. (It's okay, we all do that when we start out, just don't make it a habit)
As far as chosing a 'simple' subject, don't do that any more. Until you've done a few more extravegant images you have no idea what 'simple' really is. Simple would be something like Mon's speedpainting images, very 'simple' compositions executed briliantly. Right now your 'simple' is just boring. It's just a head. You didn't even give us the subtle joy of shoulders. It's the reason you weren't getting comments without begging for them. From now on, make interesting stuff or prepare to be completely and utterly ignored.
It looks like you have the chance to become fairly good. You just have to listen to people when they give you good advice instead of trying to explain everything away. Your clients won't care if your 'friend was distracting you', you still better be able to produce something good.
Save this one (I still have the first thing I posted 4 years ago) and start something new. And make it a little bit more...eventful. Should be interesting to see what you can come up with. _________________ matt - rhodes |
