Down the street in the park somebody installed a couple of sculpture workplaces. Some guys do wood sculptures, others soapstone. Some are painting. It's available every day and free. Sometimes hard work is followed by a barbecue at the same place.

I decided to do something small where I already knew a bit of the anatomy so I didn't have to bring tons of reference. Done in the direct carving method with hammer and chisel. Lifesize.

Marble comes with built-in translucency:

All the tools you need for this, worth about $35:

That's crazy. Very good. If you painted that up, it could pass as a real one, aside from the block of marble attached to it. Great job. That would make a freaky paperweight.

Now that's one thing I would love to learn to do. It looks very real.

you know what'd be neat though, don't mean to blabber on, but if you constructed an entire head. Each part made from individual ones like the ear. I mean as if you made another ear, two eyes, a nose, etc. each on a block, and you stacked them on each other for an abstract face... Wink pretty neat idea.

you're workign with marble though, so dunno how much that'd cost.

Yeah, I had that idea as well - doing a whole face from parts. It would actually be cheap because these are broken floor/wall tiles from the trash bin.

However, chiseling is fun. Working at small pieces like this means you barely touch the chisel with the hammer after the initial rough-in. So I'd rather do something bigger. With a better ratio between rough and detail work.

The advantage of small stones is that you can take them wherever you go.

If I don't manage to find a bigger marble block in time I might actually do it. Stacking them is a cool idea. I was more thinking of connecting them, leaving space in-between.
