After a few years of being in pathetic mod teams and pointless game projects, i have came down with some great game ideas.
Now i decided to write them down in detail and maybe even some concept designs.
Has anyone done this before? I'm just wondering what's the layout for this kinda stuff. |

Well, if you want the industry standard, it can be kinda boring--since you'd have to list the budget, production staff size, technology requirements(platform, dev stations..etc)milestone schedules, marketing strategies, as well as the game mechanics, controller layout, target gamers, blah blah. And of course, the actual concept, story, and all the "unique" things about your game.
But, if this is just for yourself, then you can skip all the non-creative stuff. |

Damn. That is pretty boring
So if this is standard, does this mean that some people actually write such "game docs" and sell them to game companies? Or someone like art director writes this all down who is already working at a game company? |

if you later want to sell this idea to someone i think it should be made as "standarized/formal as it can be. read some articles at gamasutra or gamedev how to do it.
but if you want to make it for yourself, and then start working on the game yourself you can do what i did.
i started working on a game with friends month ago. I'v registered an accaunt at http://www.lycos.co.uk/ (php + mysql) seted up phpubb. And devoted one section of that forum to game concepts and ideas , one to programing problems and so on... it works pretty well. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

The problem with trying to sell game ideas to game companies is that they're full of people who are full of ideas about games. Though companies do hire writers to help them out, to my knowledge they don't really design the game, just write the dialogue and story, and help make sure that those things are coherent, properly paced, and high quality.
As for the fun stuff, they have a large group of people willing to work long hard hours to produce their own kick ass ideas. Why look anywhere else? But I don't work in the industry, so I may be wrong. |
