Improve your skill in Adobe Photoshop(tm), with keyboard
shortcuts you can increase speed and efficiency. I will try
to give you detailed overview for the most common
shortcuts used by artists.
Along the tutorial Ill also explain the usefulnessof some of
the tools in Photoshop. For example how to change the mood
in the painting with colors. I will describe Color balance,

thanks for these shortcuts! i already use most of them, but the changing of brush types is definely useful(didn't know that one)
question: anyone who know a shortcut for rotating the brush?
while i'm writing this, your site seems to be offline. but i've read it, and would like to add some shortcuts that help me alot to work more efficient. some are not directly related to painting, and some might be already in your tut, but can't see them right now:
palettes:
F5 brushes palette
F6 color palette
F7 layers palette
F8 nav palette
F9 history palette
work area:
shift and [ or ] = change hardness of brush
ctrl and [ or ] = raise or lower layer one level
alt and [ or ] = switch to lower or higher layer
ctrl and click an area = switch to the layer of that area(move tool must be active)
shift and + or - = change blending mode for brush or layer(depending on what's active)
ctrl and T = makes layer transformable
menu:
alt and I then I = image size
alt and I then S = canvas size
alt and E = rotate canvas
there is off course so much more, but these are real timesavers for me. hope the are helpful. _________________ talent is overrated. |

Probustion, thanks.. i'll check em out and see what i can make with it.
My site is currently down due to massive bandwidth. got featured
on www.cgnetworks.com and got flooded
Matthew i havn't found any shortcut for duplicating.
But if you combine a few it goes pretty fast.
Ctrl+A = select everything in current layer
Ctrl+C = copy, doh..
CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+N = Create a new layer.
Ctrl+V = paste, doh
Or you can record an Action doing the above. And add
a shortcut yourself. _________________ Sincerely

unfortunately [ and ] are so hard to reach on a german keyboard that you need both hands when using them with shift, alt or ctrl so its easier to do it with the mouse.
Anyway thanks for the shortcuts. For duplicating layers I used so far alt + L + D + enter. Lets see if I get used to ctrl + J for its much easier.
something I didnt see here or in the tutorial yet but often used by me:
ctrl + L = Levels,
ctrl + click on a layer = selects everything in this layer (but not just like ctrl + A with a rectangular selection but rather only those pixel that are not 100% transparent)
And, sometimes when my background is a middle grey, I dont see my mouse cursor even if I move my mouse/pen around to check where it is. Easiest way to find it: Hit the space bar. That will change the cursor to the pan-cursor which is very easy to spot. Once you see it release the space bar again and go on. |

Since everyone's sharing, I thought I'd post a few got from the latest Photoshop User magazine (good mag if you can find it.
()=PC hotkeys
Duplicating an object and moving it an equal distance: First select the object you want to duplicate then press Option+Command+T (Alt+Control+T). This makes a duplicate and allows you to free transform. Now move your Object the distance you want it. Press Enter. Now, press Shift+Option+Command+T (Shift+Alt+Control+T). This creates another duplicate an equal distance as the original and the 1st dupe. Press this command for each one you want to create. For more fun, experiment with different numbers in the Free Transform's option bar. Try this to make an object go around a circle shape. Do the Option+Command+T (Alt+Control+T) step, then move the object's center point and enter a number into the rotation angle dialog. When you do the next step, you get your object spinning around a shape. Add scaling to get a spiral effect.
When viewing a channel, press ~ to see the image's composite preview instead of the channel's grayscale preview. Can come in handy for adjusting color castes or correcting stains on a photo.
When making a layer mask, hold Option (Alt) to fill it with black instead of the default white.
If you use actions (like for doing the setup steps for coloring line art), make sure to assign your action a Function key, so you can be a truely lazy artist
To merge all of your visible layers into a single new layer (and keeping all of your old layers), first create a new layer. Then press Option (Alt) and click and hold on the layer pop-up menu. Go down to Merge Visible and release.
To hide all layers but one, press Option (Alt) while clicking a layer's eye icon. Click again to toggle this feature.
To change your ruler's unit measure without going into the preference dialog, instead Control+Click (Right-Click) a ruler and pick the measurement from the pop-up.
For you airbrush fans, the airbrush toggle is Shift+Option+P (Shift+Alt+P).
Copying a Layer Mask to a new layer: First select the layer you want to add the Layer Mask too. Then click and drag on the Layer Mask frame icon (in the layer palette) you want copied, down to the create Layer Mask Button.
Those were most of the ones I found fun or useful. Also, big thanks to everyone for the tips. I've been working with PS for years, and it still amazes me that I can learn something new about it almost daily
later,

great shortcuts folks, thanks a lot I've been wishing for a 'duplicate layer' one for ages
"d" sets the foreground and background colours to pure black (0,0,0) and pure white (255,255,255). _________________ Saturnfive Design |

i just saw this the other day on tomshardware.com:
"The Adobe Photoshop Keyboard Interface is a very useful addition for Photoshop users. Normally, Photoshop users never really master the keyboard shortcuts, but the Zboard makes this `shortcut learning deficit' a thing of the past; with clear labeling of the shortcuts you can quickly locate them on the keyboard for nearly any function."
