I already posted it on 2 other forums, please, do not shoot me....
This is the final version of a figurine that was attracting dust in a corner of the workshop :) Lots of improvement if youy remember the "old" gal..
Previously named Galadriel, she has now been renamed for publishing (don't want to die by copyright strangulation..)
So here is the first of a serie of 4 characters from the Mabinogion (Welsh tales): Olwen, (literrally "white steps") daughter of Yspaddaden PenKawr. (White Steps, because everywhere she walked, white flowers kept growing in her pace)
Won me a cool prize at GenCon (thankee !), molds made by me husband, we'll be selling resin copies thru a website for the end of August (WorldCon in Toronto) One Bronze cast will be made.. just to show off, y'know...

OH GOD .............. that is ... arrgh !!!!!!!!!!!
what clay did you use ? how do you sculpt ? do you wait for the clay to dry a bit and scrape off bits and pieces and then wet it again to smoothen the surface ? do you make then in pieces and asssemble then later ?
i love sculpting, but most of the time i use paper clay .. :p ...
do you have a tutorial ? ... do a tutorial .. please ? ... do a tutorial on how you sculpted the hand ...
what type of clay did you use ? is there a wireframe underneath that model ? is there a wireframe for the hand ? i can see her fingernails, very impressive. _________________ This be my website |

Hi SoMK, nice to see youre still alive! The sculpture is SO awesome, the detail kills me. How can such a detailed thing be cast/reproduced??
P.S.: Does your forum still exist? Did you ever finish the tuts on modeling there? |

One question, where do you start when doing something like this? the head?
Keep it up

Thanks all :) It's always cool to have more than 5 answers on this glorious forum ! eh :)
Matthew & Andromeda> thanks :) As a matter of fact, I have not a classical approach about this.. Usually, I start with a block of plaster (dentistry plaster) and I carve the main part. As for details like hands, I start with a block of milliput, squish it, give a few Xacto knife cuts to create podgy fingers and let it dry in the desired position. Once it's dry as a bone (literrally) I carve it.
I'm not a modeler... Working on soft paste like the 28mm sculptors do is freaking me out. I admire the guys SO much ! I like engraving and carving. If I could work on ivory, I would !
I mainly use plaster because as I intend to do this for the next years, I try and stay out of toxic material as much as possible. But, for details, I must use milliput, so, providing gloves, I use the thing. When sanded, it generates an awful dust.. Be prepared to buy an air recycling machine with correct filters and wear mask. For this kind of figurine, I do a LOT of sanding.. ranging 120 up to 1200. Sorry, it was lengthy.. I'll try and finish that darn tutorial allright.
GlitterBug > thank you my good man :p In fact, as it is, it would be nearly impossible but I've built it in 7 different parts, all easily moldable.. First copies by the end of next week, probably. (I'm not the one working here, my husband is) He'll cast a wax copy too and I'll go Bronze cast -now, that's my job-(spinning casting for the detailed parts like hand and athmospheric for the body)
And the forum is dead.. just because I didn't find time to update it and all.. I'd like to start again but it will not be for the next months. I nonetheless will finish writing a tutorial for my site. For once, I took picts.
I do intend to sell copies. I'm "giving it a try" this year. We're making like 8 different figurines and will try to sell them, go to Conventions and all. Mainly assembled and white but, if I'm drunk enough, I will engrave and paint like 5 limited edition copies... I'll see.
Happens what may with this so-so economy, at least I will have tried ! :) _________________ Tekeli-li = / = Deviant |
