I want to finish this one day, ... I left it off in a somewhat presentable state.

reference was from my friend's grad group photo, I only painted her in, and left everyone else off the canvas.

some areas which I know need fixing ::
chest,
chair,
parts of the hand and leftside arm,
hair needs refining.
and probably a nice bg to finish it off. Smile

Can you replace that with a version that's somewhat less monstrously large?

Looks great but could do with a bit more work eg. Coloured light on figure and refining some things.
I think a earthy red instead of white would look nice.

first of all make it smaller and second of all get rid of the distracting brush strokes in the background

Looks good, how do you get the loaded palette knife one constant color (assumming you used it for the background and for some of the character). Mine has like lighter and darker colors in it.
