I was trying for a bit more realism, but it ended up being more "cartoon" and reminds me of something from the monkey island games. Any tips on what I can work in style wise to improve realism. I know one major thing I should do is us reference pics which I did use for the light coming from the cave. It could use quite a bit more work, but I think I'm done with this one. Comments or paintovers are welcome.

ok, i did a quick paintover.. Smile
the problems i found with your picture was that it was too flat... your lightsources were not quite established, and there was little depth.

you can create a more dynamic scene by adding a secondary light source (usually a light blue is most effective)! just peruse these forums... its a goldmine of skill for pictures that use more than one light source.

i dunno if you wanted a night scene Very Happy, but im just tryin to get the point across that lightsources and light are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT when trying to achieve realism...

i just adjusted the brightness/contrast to make it darker, then added a secondary lightsource coming from the trees in the background, added some shadows and whatnot...

my paintover can only be as real as the drawing, so if you wish to draw something that is realistic, you should look at some forest/jungle scenes as reference, and use a variety of smaller and larger brushes to get thin lines and textures, foliage, grass, etc...

remember: EVERYTHING reflects light off everything and bounces off many surfaces!

examine everything you see, and try to duplicate lightsources, and you WILL GET BETTER!!! Wink

hope i was of some help! Smile

Thanks a ton for the input. I have been browsing the forums for awhile.. and in general know a lot of the rules about reflected light, etc. But I think I need to just keep practicing and having direct feedback on what I'm doing wrong helps a bunch.
