Great work everyone. Reakshun, I dig your horses.

You know Brian, I can spot your pieces a mile away--especially the color palette--you tend to lean towards lots of orange/red/yellow--and in some cases contrast it strongly with blues/purples. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm not sure if it's a good thing either?

I just had a thought while looking through today's speedpaints:

I see a lot of people adapting the more impressionistic experiments, following Spooge's lead. On one hand I like that style--as it's refreshing, especially when used in the digital context. At the same time, I'm a little nervous of what it might imply--people concentrating too much on the cosmetic styling, and eventually it becomes a crutch and an excuse to paint everything "unexplained."

I say this because I see some of the less experienced artists following this style, and IMHO, it's harmful to their growth if they preoccupy themselves with this approach too much in the beginning. Spooge does it because he's had a solid foundation in the basics of art, and he's looking for other ways to express himself. The less experienced artists maybe should strengthen their foundation with a less forgiving painting style before moving onto the impressionistic experiments?

Am I the only one that feels this way?

Thanks for the feedback Lunatique.

This one turned out very warm because I wanted to present a sense of heat, choking dust and ash . . . I've done predominantly cool or neutral pieces as well. Unfortunately, I don't paint often enough to do rapid laps around the color wheel. Must find time . . .

I agree to some extent about the trend of Spooge-biting (it's not exactly anything new around here, is it Smile ), but I would say that a certain degree of ambiguity is inevitable in speedpainting. Isn't the whole point of the thread to efficiently capture the essence of something? Maybe your critique would be better leveled at the forum as a whole over in the discussion area.

Another speedy DSG Embarassed

I'm using the same lightsourcing cuz it's very descriptive and I like displaying stuff. I should probably experiment some more but with speedy stuff it's easy to resort to familiar shapes and rendering.

edit: On the matter on spoogification; when you paint fast in Photoshop it tends to end up a certain way. There's not much you can do about it with just 2 brushes (PS5.5). But of course it's ineffective to try to copy any artist's style unless you understand the foundation and process (which is not really visible in the finished painting). It's however something I suspect all or most artists have done in their early stages. When you see something really impressive, such as spooge's paintings, you just want to be able to do that yourself, right away.

I understand that painting fast tends to give a certain look, but what I'm saying is that emulating Craig down to the brush textures, brush stroke, subject matter..etc--for the sake of emulating, is not necessarily helpful to an artist's growth. Where does the emulating for the sake of emulating begin, and the intent to do a speedpaint for the sake of learning end?

This is like Drew Struzan all over again. I bet you Drew is not feeling too flattered these days for all the copycats that put a damper on his career.

Anyway, I think I'm out of line here. I'll shut up.

prom> very nice!

drunken> dig those portraits

mikko> thx! dig your war ship too, great values!

sometypeof> thx man. eh, your pic doesnt show.

anyone from Amsterdam kowns what the thing is?i was quite impressived when i saw it. firstly i thought its a boat, somehow,it doesnt really seem to be....from memory, abt 90min.

does this one look MULLINS-LIKE? maybe, but i dont really care about personal style on this stage, rather concentrate more on "how to paint". style, when its time to come,it will.

Lunatique: I definitely see what you mean but at the same time I don't see anything that's worth worrying about. Especially not in this fine thread Wink

wassup: That's an awesome painting. The way you employ saturation is really balanced now.

Prometheus-ANJ: Nice. I also really enjoyed your Polyhedron cover last month. I was like, "isn't that...?" and it totally was.

Making brushes is fun; painting is hard:

Lunatique, a good point. I don't know if my pic on the previous page was a part of your concern, but here's my opinion. I don't think Spooge should worry about beginning artists copying his style. Because all that will eventually go away, either by learning a style of their own or maybe some people will quit after realising they don't improve that way.

I still have to say however, that pre-Spooge (and Dusso etc.), I really didn't know a successful way to paint in Photoshop because I like to use very limited brushes. Painter seemed okay, but when it comes to personal tastes, I miss a lot of 'crispness' and 'edge' in digital art. And Spooge has a nice way of dealing with this in my opinion. Though I really enjoy artwork like Brom and Frazetta, I haven't seen too many good digital examples of that particular style.

littlejohn> Yeah it was me... I'm not very happy with it. They wanted something really saturated and I'm not used to doing wierd lighting or enviroments at all. Also, I should sharpen my pics before sending them off. Anyone got any ideas on sharpening 300ppi pics for print effectively?

Oh, I guess I gotta post something too. I'm not sure if I posted it before, but here's an avatar I made for myself a while ago. Actually I just wanted to paint a different type of orkhead but it worked so well as an avatar.

Lunatique : You've definitely got a fair point on the subject matter tip. It's nice to see people painting something different. But I disagree about the style of painting comments. I personally have no aspirations to produce any realistic paintings. After a day at work I'll paint to relax, which means messy and effortless. I hope this still has something to contribute towards the thread.

I'd rather see some novel ideas impressionistically presented, than a thousand perfect renderings of fantasy scenes. But that's just me. Depends what you're here for i guess.

wasssup - thank you, your latest is totally amazing art very good. :)

All this talk about spooge made me do a inspired spooge
picture, I have had one of his micke mouse
pictures as a background and all of a sudden I made a similar one.
I like his pictures more when he is not using the custom
brushes, cant say why thou.

Wassup: Thanks, love your work so its nice to get a compliment from you.
Reak: That comparison occured to me despite the fact i did stuff like this when i was 18-21 in black and white and the comparison was less clear then though in a way its the opposite of pollock because he never touches the canvas with the brush and i try never to lift it from the canvas heh

I remember when I first started doing these looser sketches people were very much puzzled, almost insulted.

As I have said before, imitation doesn't bother me artistically at all, but when so many do things that look like my stuff it has the effect of maybe overexposure and shortening the commercial life of the style. Prices are driven down as well, and I am sure few here have my overhead.

But there is nothing that I or anyone can or should do. I remember working in a Syd Mead style early on. I am sure the talented here will leave me in the dust soon enough, that is the way art moves.

and now so I could say that, I have to post something

hey Spooge, maybe its possible to imitate your sketchy cool looking art, but im sure everybody here immediately see if its done by YOU ore someone else.
The thing is you are deffinetly the border , the aim for most artists here. So its just a normal way that so many guys try to get some style like you. I think that soon each one will go on finding his own way how to draw his art.

But we all know you, your artwork, everything you have done. So theres just one Spoogecustombrushlookingspeedyart around. And thats you man.

AMAZING WORK ALL!!!!!
A quiky si fi landscape with a girl : o) i hope u like =) bw i think that makeing things in a impresionint way it is an old method of gaing unity on an image i liked that style before i bought my wacom tabelt but i do belive that making thing quik and on impresionist sylte helps a lot to gain a good color and sence deep understaing.
I wish that on my art school tachers would have started to teach me to draw that way sice it is som much more fun and results are way more expresive, then again is juts my personal opinion, long life to impresionism!!!! Very Happy

lunatique: do you feel it's bigger problem that people imitate spooge than that people dive right into expressive painting without focusing on the foundation first?
i guess i'm trying to fight both battles at once, working on foundation and trying to develop interesting style. i'm just hoping to balance it right... (but then there are those who do not believe in foundation. and that's all very fine in my book if the pictures are nice.)
