here's something i painted (from ref) some weeks ago. finally decided to post it and see what happens. this is one of my first traditional paintings so be gentle
here's a little question for you. what's the big difference between canvas board and a "real" canvas with wooden frame? i assume the paint gets absorbed better by a real canvas, but: imagine i would be selling a painting in the future, is it bad to use a canvas board for this? i suppose it looks kinda amateurish, i dunno...
i have more questions, but think it's better to try first and ask questions later.

Well, there are a few differences. I dont' think you want the oil to soak into the canvas, which is why you need to prime it with Gesso or something. If it soaks in oil will eat the canvas and destroy it over time, which people who buy paintings don't like.
The big difference for me ( Aside from the fact that a stetched canvas looks nice even unframed ) is that the canvas reacts with your brush. For lack of a better term, the bounciness of the canvas reacts with your brush strokes so that there is a little more spontanaeity in them. That's what I've found anyway. I find with canvas boards your always sort of mushing your brush into the board, since it's unmoving, but with stretched canvas if moves over the surface because the canvas sort of 'pushes back'. I hope that made sense
And about the painting, great polar bears, I love the big brush strokes in the fur. I think I'd have tried something different with the sky, since it's sort of 'the same' all over the painting? But regardless, good job ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ -----------

There isn't any difference between canvas board and real canvas. Any decent canvas board should be made by stretching canvas over a board, it should be exactly the same stuff as a stretched canvas. The paint isn't absorbed by either surface as it should be sealed with a primer before you paint.
If you are selling a painting and its on board you really need to frame it as there's no way of attaching it to the wall otherwise. Once in a frame you won't really be able to tell the difference between board or a a stretched canvas. One advantage of box stretched canvas is that you don't need a frame.
In terms of painting I find there's very little difference between the 2. Although canvas board has an annoying tendency to bend when exposed to warm sunlight. |

thanks for the tips both of you. i didn't really know what primer is. i thought it would be enough to use sandpaper on the board to make the paint hold better. i learn more every day ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ talent is overrated. |
