duracel, you're right, will keep that in mind. although it seems harder to find good photos with only one extreme lightsource, or direct sunlight(the photographer seeks multiple lightsources, where the artist prefers only one?).
in case you're wondering, i shot the pic in luxembourgh last summer. that vacation was the first time i ever used a camera(really), i should do more, i know it's good practice.
what a coincidence, here's a pic with extreme lightsource for ya. once again, used photoref for this one

DXA: Great start, can't wait to see the finished piece.
Pierre: You rock! You deserve a folder on my hard drive! Would love to see all your images in one post though, easier for me to save!
Everyone, great work! I wish I could paint faster, but this thread is very inspiring!
I'm not fast, but working on it. |

Probustion: you noob
Well first of all I must tell you that when I was a kid, I drew F-14 s after F14s after f14s I must have drawn 100s of them (favourite plane) so Basically I know where every little thing is on the plane, even though my sketch is not perfect :/
When I want to paint an object I think of it like it's a tutorial for 3D lighting, I read one years ago about how to light a scene, and I thought, hey that's just like painting,
Basicly I try to buil dup the shape of things with the color they are and then workfrom there to detail, I think understanding the detail of an F-14 is like understanding the things in a face wich I'm very bad at though ehhe
here's the mini tute I made for ya, it's not super awesome and it might not be what you wnted explained but anyway could be good for someone maybe hehe

seeing all the nice work here forced me to take an hour, and this is all I could do. Maybe I won't quit my day job just yet. Looks like something hanging over a bar or one of those bullfighter paintings. NITBOT (not in the best of taste)

All my workmates are in Sandiego for an anime con. They left me to draw whales, all by myself, in the dark, listening to chet baker... boohoo
