Here is a newer photoshop image I am working on. I am wondering on how I might increase the realism(lighting/texturing) of the islands. Any other helpfull comments are welcome.

I love the idea ... the reflection cheered me up
You can edit your post and fix the link btw!
You can register @ deviantart.com if you want to show your images directly.
About the islands ... they look like 2d shapes copied and pasted on the background.
If you want the image to look more realistic try a more painterly approach.
Use reference images and use the brush tool to paint.
Pick your colors ... don't just dodge&burn. Avoid the smudge tool.

I guess textures are not as important for realism as you think.
Don't try to hide behind lots of effects. You should know what you are doing.
