Well, after entirely too long working on it, I finally finished up this pic for a contest between a few friends of mine over at a small art board. I am aware of several anatomy issues (fubar'ed legs and hands especially) and I know some of the faces are kinda screwwy, but I tried to fix em up and had like, zero luck getting better than this, if anyone feels like oping it, or can explain to me what makes them look f'ed up, I'd be very grateful *.*
Anyway, bit of backstory, the 7 characters are all clones (the 7th char is the lil superdeformed catgirl on the head of the middle one) The purpose of the pic was to have them all shown in one image, with their senses of fashion and personalities showing as much as possible, at the very least, so that they were each identifiable. There had to be a background with it.
so here's the finished up pic, took several tries to get a composition I liked, even more to get outfits right, more still to get poses ok, about the only thing that went smooth was the coloring.
And my lineart is fugly

Hey Gygaxis, it looks like it took a long time to draw! I like the face of the girl in the aqua coloured outfit down the bottom. The crits you gave your self are pretty spot on. My only crit is about the painting technique. It really depends on what you're going for though. Were you going for realism or cartoon colouring? It almost seems like there's a conflict of styles. Smooth rendering stuff with solid lineart can be a bit clunky and it's hard to make it work. I think it works well for the characters, but the background looks very 'last minute'. Also you said that the lineart looks fugly. Lineart and backgrounds are things I'm terrible with but I've realised that neat lineart and a well thought out background can make the difference between a good image and a great image. The skin tones are very warm and rich, which I like and I like the shadows you have being cast in there. Anyway, hope I wasn't too harsh, good luck in the comp! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

It looks great Gygaxis ^____^
I agree with JasonN that the styles conflict a bit; perhaps next time you can try using the lineart as a base, but painting over it in the end to go for a more "realistic" look. I know it's a style thing, but trying new things is always fun
The one thing that really sticks out to me is the hip/thigh/knee placement and proportions on the two girls in skirts. Their legs look like they are uneven lengths, and a little bit long. Also, the right leg of the girl in the brown skirt isn't showing underneath her left knee.
Overall, I love it. You're improving by leaps and bounds, I can't wait to see your next piece. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |
