bravo pierre!
matthew: I admire your persistence

edit> so I'm gonna do live paintings too!

can anyone give me some pointers on drawing life? I can paint a mouse fine, but the skin is so distracting! I want to paint all the colors there but it doesn't work!

Great work, everyone.

Pierre: Your latest paintings have been amazing. That lighting is beautiful.

Drunken Monkey: Your samurai painting is really nice. I like it a lot. Just to be nitpicky, though, the Japanese didn't use shields. Smile

Pierre, thanks man. One day i'll learn how to finish a painting ;]

Bishop_Six, thanks! They used light metal shields against muskets in later centuries.

(these are very quick)

about wimpy samurais, there's a good movie : Taboo (2000), dir. Nagisa Oshima.
the amazon 'review' :
This fascinating, gorgeous film examines homosexual passions among the samurai of an 1865 militia. Taboo centers around a young samurai named Kano, whose smooth face and soft beauty makes him an object of desire. Rumors about who might be his lover lead to a love triangle, dazzling swordfights, and a mysterious murder. The story is intriguing enough, but what makes Taboo even more striking is that the heterosexual samurai treat their comrade's queer leanings as possibly dangerous, but only because of the potential for jealousy and inflamed passions--there's no sense that they see it as unnatural or even unmanly, in striking contrast with the American military view. Japanese superstar Beat Takeshi (Fireworks, Sonatine) plays a samurai captain struggling to maintain order in the ranks. Elegantly directed by Nagisa Oshima.

Well, a lot of cultures treated homosexuality differently than the American military view. For instance, the Spartans promoted homosexuality in their ranks and would try to get lovers fighting alongside each other going by the theory that you'd fight harder, and wouldn't be so quick to run away from battle, knowing that your lover was in the fray.

Awesome pics btw, HPX and balistic.

Soeren - your picture looks fine. It's not about who is good, who isn't blah blah blah, it's about improving yourself and being happy with what you have. I personally think your picture is fine... but meh.. what do I know? lol.

My contribution.

... I had the strange experiance of renting that movie last holloween while just a little drunk with a few drunk friends. One of my friends that was there is really into kung fu and samurai movies, so when he saw the cover of a new movie out, with some guy fighting another guy with swords on the cover, he had to get me to get it. Of course he didn't read the back. :/

Yeah, we were surprised the next day while watching the movie when the men started going, "I love you Toshiro, you must know that." for a while we were debating whether the feminine guy was really a girl. Then we found out it... it was a gay samurai movie, due to a specific scene I won't mention. Shocked
