I do agree with the guys matt, your stuff looks very good, keep that style. I especially agree with the composition comment, I think you do have a good sense of getting the balance right in a pic, and that is so important, the rendering may be that of a God, but if the composition fails, the pic will fail. Keep up the good work! |

thanks for the response guys, its really appreciated. ill try to post more art in this thread soon, maybe today.
Sumaleth: No crits?! haha jk. thanks for the comments
Hyptosis: ive been painting backrounds all quarter, so i definately improved. the work i have seen from you is pretty nice, keep it up.
Mon: thank you, your work is amazing btw . on a side note, Im going to try to apply to some d20 publishers soon, any tips? thanks for the comments
Sparth: Your work has really inspired me sparth, your colors own! thanks for the comments man.
Lunae Dies: thank, hehe i tried out a bunch of different brushes, which helped me alot. Also i guess i kinda cheated with some of the textures, i took a photo, greyscaled it, and put it as like an overlay or multiply layer at 5-10% to get some extra texture.
Pierre: Very true words you speak about composition and design. THank you, and you have a great style yourself btw.
Max Kulich: haha, thanks, id love to try a matte painting one of these days, not at that level yet though. hopefully soon
Wasssup: thank you, great tank paintings in the speedpainting thread.
crazybread: thank you. _________________ http://mryan.epilogue.net |

Very nice. I particularly like the snow scenes - they show some strong composition.

Very nice... some great drawing and painting all round. One thing I noticed was that a lot of your landscapes have an enclosing composition. You seem to have a tendency to push objects up each side and then leave the center with some space. Just look at all the snow scenes, almost every single one has this effect. It's not a bad thing at all... but just distracted me when I got down to the first green painting. Then I noticed the second one had two hills either side. It was becoming a bit repetitive. I'm not sure if that was intentional but I'm just highlighting it incase you missed it.
The composition style is very strong as is... but it seems a bit like a 'crutch' after a while. Try breaking out and try some new composition ideas.
Otherwise, everything is really nice! Hope that helps. |

Ian, you are very correct. my friend also pointed this out to me. I was wondering, are there any classical compositions that are used very often. i just want to see what are some of the tried and trued methods, becuase after rehearing this my stuff is starting to look kinda bland . im working on another piece right now, and it seems like its following the same pattern. im not doing this on purpose, but im having a hard time not doing it. its a definate crutch.
what do ya think. _________________ http://mryan.epilogue.net |

hey there, sorry I'm so late to reply.. I couldn't find the thread again (forgot name).
Nothing to be embarrased about Matt, everyone has their crutches and if we didn't have some sort of consistency how would we recognise your work as 'yours'. Idiosyncrasies can also be strengths.
About the 3 pics... I'm not really sure which one I would pick. If I were to try and narrow it down I would say that in the third pic the bottom corner shape isn't as good as the cauldron in the second pic. I think that a round shape is softer and the shading has less distracting contrast than the bold 'attention seeking' diagonal line. The interest factor is what probably sways my decision though. The story of the image has some more depth with that cauldron than without it.
The first pic has some very intruiging details and certainly grabbed some attention. It sits pretty nicely but the large black expanse to the left is a problem factor. I really don't know... you got me here. I can't justify any particular one with any certainty.
That probably didn't help... lol |
