They interviewed a matte artist on the Final Fantasy DVD. This guy:
I kind of doubt it, since he had sort of an accent and Spooge said he grew up in Ohio. But they never mentioned any names, so I'm not sure. In fact, it kind of pissed me off that they didn't mention any names. They stick James Woods' name all over though.

That is Christian S. I am not even going to try to spell his last name, I would butcher it bad. Look on the DVD someone.
Christian is Swiss. He spent a lot of time working on the FF games and learned Matte painting while on the film, and did so very well. |

Then show us what you look like. I always think of you like a very old man with long white beard sitting in his armchair in the sun infront of his house. With your wife bringing you cookies when you draw white cubes while puffing on your pipe. |

[edit - pic removed. Just illustrating spooge's likeness to Dustin Hoffman. Meant in good humour, but, as snarf points out, possibly inappropriate. Sowwy Craig.]

It is becoming increasingly apparent why Craig feels smothered here.
He is a great artist, and a great teacher, and people respect him. However, placing a halo over his head is a little much don't you think? We've all learned he is very modest, I'd imagine stuff like this would be rather embarrassing for him.

i dunno, i don't think it's a bad thing to look up to an artist you admire. the halo image was for some joke-thread a while back i think.
besides, wouldn't we all choose respect instead of the opposite? |

Don't get me wrong, I very much admire Craig. However, there is a difference between admiring someone, and lifting them to a level of near god-like proportions.
It's one thing to appreciate Craig both for his art and the way he goes out of his way to help others. It is an entirely different thing to have thousands trying to mimic his style, painting halos over his head, and generally drooling over him all together. It's like he's Elvis and we're horny women.
There is a line... |

Hallelujah Snarf ...
However, I don't think ANYONE in a public forum is above being the focus of others creative thrust. Especially if they stand out by their skills. If you see something you like, and might be able to be inspired by it, that's a good thing. If you try to emulate and copy, it is less so.
God only knows how many David Carson clones spawned up in the 90s in the graphic design world. I'd say it has not done graphic design any favours by having everyones output look the same. (adding some fuel to the fire, nothing wrong with having lots of replies to a post, right Freddio ?)
Being a celebrity has many downsides, but as most celebrities will tell, the good stuff far outweighs the bad. (Some Hollywood star said that on TV the other day, I forgot who, was it Bruce Willis ?)
When people take the time to talk about you in courteous terms, or to make harmless jokes, it is usually considered an honour.
Even if it is not, as is the case with Thatcher above, the Televised statement is very likely "Thatcher is ugly, and looks like a man" hardly flattery, and still, she's ok with it ...
Why is that ??
If you're not able to handle a bit of positive (or negative) attention, you should probably do like Prince does, just hide ..

Jeez, I'd sure like to be a celebrity! Have thousands of faked pron pictures of me on the net with greedy 13 year olds masturbating to. Err.. that is if I was a woman. Oh not to mention those marriages that no one can be faithful to! Be married for more than 2 years? Get out of town! Oh and the drugs! Hell yeah! Did I mention being worshipped like Jesus?? Hell, here I come! How about tabloids saying I was once a lesbian and a man at the same time?? Or that I had an alien child and that Ellen Degeneres is my new lover?
Im sure Craig is with me on this. He'd just love that kind of lifestyle. |

Well aquamire, no offense, but I do not believe that is the kind of smash hit any illustrator here will ever have ... not even Craig ...
Maybe if this was a rock star board, or a Hollywood actor board, or a european royalty board, possibly even some sports stars ... but illustrators and artists ??? They are usually dead by the time they get any sort of large scale attention ...
I don't think anyone is likely to be very hurt from whatever pops up on this board ...
The worst I can think of is if someone cashes in on someone elses work ..

That's my friend Christian Scheurer, the crazy swiss guy - he's a riot and an excellent conceptual artist. At the time this interview was done I was long gone.
[edit - should've read the whole thread before answering]
