These are from evenings and weekends over the last month or two. Couple are totally new, one is a reworked older game concept sketch, one is an old sketchbook sketch painted over, and there is a closeup shot at the end. Let me know what you think! Very Happy

Francis,

I love your latest installment. This stuff looks much more painterly than the other stuff from you that I've seen. I think all of these have a great sense of mood (and a dark one at that).

I do have one small comment on the first image. I am having a hard time placing the levitation figure spacially...I want him in the background, but I have a feeling that you are intending him to be in the middleground over the well of light. Correct? Maybe having some light hit the bottom of his sleeves would help place him more definately in the middleground. Unless he is supposed to be in the background...in that case, disregard everything I've just said. Wink

love the last one Francis,

you're definitely taking strides lately in your work.. very inspirational!!!

my only crit (and it's a minor one) I like the last one as I said, but I would suggest maybe taking it up a notch... (and this is merely a suggestion, since it's fine the way it is) but I see it more stylized now, considering the legs being mostly in silo, it makes them appear more graphic than anything.. perhaps add some more reflected/bounce light.... I think that would be a nice piece... on the level of let's say package art, (i.e. print caliber work) etc... taking your work out of the more conceptual feel that you definitely do well

and on a further note, by all means, I don't insinuate (sp?) that your work isn't at that caliber already, but my perception of print work and concept work is the strong attention to detailing that sets it apart

in print, an tangible image you hold in your hand for up close inspection. there are all those tiny little additives that make it punch (as they would say in an ad agency)

an in concept work, those details tend to not be addressed, because it's typically unneccessary for what its' end use will be.. (I know you understand this already, sorry for my babbling) but I really feel that some bit more attention to the last one, will make it stand out a lot.... almost like you could market your work for multiple genres... Francis- the concept artist, Francis- the architect, Francis- the illustrator.. jeez, give us other guys a chance at finding some work Smile

but overall excellent work... (I'm inspired to maybe post again!!!)

later

Bobby

Get Up Kid - I think I see what you mean. The problem is with the figure, because I was trying to make him luminescent and ethereal, which ends up fighting the foreground/midground/background value scheme. Maybe I should have just made it more solid, to fit into the scene better. Thanks for the observations!

Po - thank you.

Jason - thanks, I had posted a couple of sketches of that character here ages ago, and thought it might be interesting to paint over one of them.

Matt - cool man, thx.

flat - cool glad you dig them.

Max - thanks, and thanks for all the past encouragement.

Bobby - thanks for that great, useful crit. This is indeed somewhere where I have to defer to your experience, so it is much appreciated. I have definitely been thinking along those lines, but obviously I have a long way to go. Keep kicking my ass on this stuff, it helps me a lot.

burnout - yeh it's me! Thanks for the encouragement.

Hoodz - thanks! Uh, I don't know what the GS thing is about? Is that a question to Bob?

I don't understand how people DO stuff like that... Really awesome. Hey, are there any computer programs you can use to make that? And are there any online tutorials for it?

I saw the first 3 on GFX, and the last one half done on EK. I really like the finished version, although I like the legs how they are, I agree they could be improved with some extra lighting. Keep cranking it out.

Hoodz - OK!

Frost - thanks man. Yeah things are cool. I am now a concept artist at Sammy Studios, very swell gig. Still looking for a bunch of artists, and I believe we are always willing to check out concept art portfolios. How are you??

viag - thank you I will do my best.

malachi - thanks!

Iddi - Thank you very much. There are all kinds of tutorials, but I think it's more a matter of studying traditional art and working on basic skills - anatomy, values, color theory, etc. I'm still learning all those things myself, and these images are sort of snapshots of my learning process.

Nerfherder - thank you, I just posted another w.i.p. shot on EK. I will probably post the finished one soon.

Gez - thanks!
