I guess Ill take that as a compliment davi. I sympathize with you though. Ive seen work that is obviously drawn over.

I work by scanning in my pencil sketches, then smudge, paint, dodge/burn it in Photoshop using a tablet. This was just a study in composition and achieving facial likeness otherwise I wouldnt have followed my reference so closely.

Looking toward the future, davi, I would suggest that if you feel someone has done a paintover, contact them privately and ask them. Rather then making a post that degrades their personal effort. After all this forum is here for constructive criticism.

Thanks for the backup Matt!

Everytime those same damn stupid people think they can take old painter for a ride.
You can say what you want, davi is right.

So get out of here and fool your mom, she'll believe you.

look at the animated .gif
look at the creases in the shirt, the entire border of every shape- everything lines up 100% except for a tiny part of the hairline near the forehead- something he could have done by hand after a trace. I have been a sijun regular for 4 years, and a regular at other art forums for many years as well. I have been involved in art for most of my life. I find it 99.9% impossible to believe that someone did a freehand drawing that just happened to have every line in the perfect aspect, in perfect relation. It's possible. He could have spent a long time making a grid system or spent weeks revising it based on a picture. but even if he did, that's not art, that's mimicry. Art is knowing what to stress and what to ignore. finding an emotion or feeling or quality and seeing that quality in your subject. photojournalism is about copying the precise aspect of a photo, with all the detail and lack of message or vision in a photo. art is about expression.

whatever, I'm sure you're just philbranes under another login anyways, so why am I bothering. have fun tracing fellows! whatever floats your boat- just don't expect people to praise you for it.

I would never have thought it would come to this. bravo.

For those of you tired of the non-debate and would like to offer some suggestions to improve by. I would be grateful.

i've seen many people on this forum post paintovers... it takes skill to go and shade it and to actually make it look realistic in composition...
give the guy a break, its a good piece of work.

whats so bad about a paintover davi? ive seen many people on this forum do paintovers, why does the new guy gotta get hassled? when he first posted with the picture, he didnt say "I DREW ALL THIS!" dont be so quick to jump to conclusions.

phil, nice work. i like it. that rabbit is fuckin scary! Very Happy

I dont think its a paintover, unless he put in defects on purpose.
look at the edges of the shirt, look at several parts of the colar, look at the shape of the face, look at the sideburns and other parts of the hair, look at the ear, look at the mouth, look at the nose.
Theres alot of defects that lead me to believe hes eather bad at paintovers or good at freehand. but then theres some parts if the shading that look to perfect and im almost sure he at least painted over some parts.
I'm gonna say he did draw this, or at least %70 of it.
But im no expert so dont take my opinion seriously.
