I've been dying to make music again, and this short test was done to try out the sequencing functions in the Korg Triton LE Music Workstation. I'll probably extend it and finish one day, but this was my baby step to get back into musical shape.

I love tribal/ethnic percussions, so I used that as the core to this piece. It was a blast to program the complex percussions towards the end. I love it when the 32th note rolls kicks in, then goes back to 16th note. I guess that's what makes it sound "authentic" to that middle eastern percussion style. It's so tricky to input during programming though. I basically just played each part with 2 fingers at about 100 bpm(the piece itself is at 110 bpm).
I used a mixture of the Arabic and melodic minor scale, but the foundation was just a perfect 5th and 4th notes with string section, which alternates in the lowest octave(well, lowest on my 61 key version of Triton LE anyway).
I didn't have any effects for this short test. It probably would've sounded better with some effects, but with only 2 inserts and one master total for the sequencer mode(that's all 16 tracks, not per track), I'd just end up frustrated that I couldn't use more.
I really hate the tiny LCD screen on hardware synth/sampler workstations. Making music from start to finish on them is a nightmare. I'm testing out some software solutions like Logic, Sonar, Cubase, Buzz..etc. So far, Logic seems to be the winner. |

Wow man!! I really like it!! I share the same love for the use of ethnic percussion (Peter Gabriel's "Passion", Lorenna McKennitt). One thing - really just a personal thing and not meant disparigingly - is the intro synth; the sort of staccato (I say "sort of" staccato, because the notes dont't exactly "cut" by the definition of staccato) between notes feels like the piece aurally "breaks" from an intended impression - an impression defined by say the warm but continuous sun and heat of North Africa.
OK - aside from my rambling I think it's a steller piece, and I would be interested in hearing more like it. _________________ - Tom Carter
