You guys make me absolutely sick to my stomach, the skill in this thread is absolutely mind-blowing.
I have to give the big props to Matthew though, despite all the big-guns posting on these forums, I see you constantly pushing yourself, you've REALLY improved, especially in the pieces from the past month or so. MAD GUSTO! Keep up the great work!

Hello!
I've been posting long time ago here, and now I see that the place got insane. You guys are awesome!!! On the other hand I havent been drawing for more then a year. I was doing mostly 3d and some cheap matte painting, that are mostly based of photos.
I have a quick Q especially to spooge and balistic capt. flush (ohh... there are a lot more of course! so much talent here!), as they have a really unique wayof painting. How do you guys achieve such and interesting texture to your paintngs?
If I have time I have no problems with building wolumes, although shading them and choosing the right colo palette is always tough. How do you eyeball what color has to be where. With photo reference it is almost like cheating, but I doodle and doolde now and then whenever I have a break at work, but I cant seam to find the way to eyeball colors right. Also volumes are OK, having light detributed right is really hard. There is just alwais something wrong, and I see it, but I cant predict what do I have to paint to make it look mor realistic. Any tips and comments are appreciated!!!

Denis,
are you sure it is texture you want? i think you need to work more on the basic shape design that goes into good drawing before worrying about texture. Don't worry about color either, if the values work, any old color will do for now.
If you look at the thing I you see that in shadow there is little contrast or information at all. You have a lot of stuff going on everywhere, it loses the feeling of light and shadow. I reversed the figure ground relationship so the figure does not feel glowing, esp in shadow.
In general, (I picked this up form Flushy) think about what you are doing, less painting, more thinking. Once you have decided what you think you need to do, do it and let it alone. don't go back and twiddle, squint, worry, paw, moan the same thing again and again. Do it with confidence and leave it alone. Even if it is wrong it will be OK.
Less scrubby, more flat, so you can see where you are.
I hope this does not confuse.
Gotta go back to work, procrastinating here

Thanks alot Craig. Really helpfull tips. I promised my self to do at least five speedy paintings everyday... its night rightnow though so I'll slack a little =))
BTW, I've sent you an email, and I guess you receiveso may of them that you might even miss it. I'll just post it here. but if you have time look at the image I atteched to that email (cant post it here).

Hello Mr. Mullins!
My name is Dennis Sedov, and Im currently working for Lance Wilhoite, who you worked with on 500 Nations. Im doing matte painting and compositing work with him, and it is the first commercial project Im doing. I have no traditional art background whatsoeverm all self tought.
Maybe its too much to ask, but having looked at your work at Sijun and at your site for quite a long time now, it became clear to me that I want to do mattepaintng work. I just finished my thrid shot with Lance and it took me almost a month to finished it (destroyed downtown of New York) Im looking for some simple tips you could recomend me when using Photoshop for matte work. I cant get that crispines and texture. It always looked a little smudged and somehow unrealistic. I include the sample image with this email (I havent signed NDA, so I guess I can show it to you) there is also more on my website.
I just turned 21, so I have 1 more year till 22 (your age when you worked on 500 nations =)) to learn the rest. Im just looking for couple usefull tips. Like custom brushes, some presets you use, style of paintng. I was looking at your pics for hours, to understand the brush stroke patterns, so it really helped me alot!
I hope to hear from you soon!!

cool work all of you!
Matthew, I would say that is all the Sijun members busy doing speed paintings
This is an oil painting, used a ref for this one. Following Zorns formula of doing it with 4 colors, cold black, warm red, golden ochre and white, and of course, a wide brush.
