Why does the new imac look like a cosmetic mirror with a cute little round cabinet?
Makes me want to powder my nose in front of it. |

Reminds me of those moving targets you get at the Carnival. You know, the one's that swing left & right and you have to shoot it. |

AGH. Anybody who buys a computer for the way it looks is an idiot. And an idiot with a faster better computer is just a faster idiot. Though if anyone even bought that thing for cosmetic reasons, they obviously have no fashion sense either. I'd like to have the monitor tho.
Who was it that said, If you build a computer that an idiot can use, only idiots will use it? Bah, I dont remember. |

I dunno. I think it looks to be the perfect solution to the average consumer. THERES NO COMPUTER!! IT"S ALL SCREEN!
How can this be bad? Hell, it's a great, practical design as far as I can see, as long as that's a damn heavy base so it won't knock over. It has almost no footprint!
Lets hope more machines in the future are this "gay" my computer setup takes more than 60% of my desk space right now, and I could use the extra room.
I would buy one for my office desk, if I didn't already have a laptop. |

This is obviously a stupid argument. Are people who buy nice looking cars idiots as well? Every single consumer product you buy has been designed to be asthetically pleasing buy some a design team. The fact that your computer happens to be ugly doesn't make you intelligent.
Now as for the new imac, it is still a little too expensive for now, but it should still be good for lazy people who don't want to waste time putting a computer together and installing software. |

personally, i think MAC is for people who use them as a TOOL.
A TOOL to surf the web, a TOOL to listen to music....bla bla, they obviously don't care about the hardwares stuff. |

IT would seem that computer users ae going in two different directions.
1) the conservatives, people who want the old ways. They believe that the old computer setup is fine the way it is. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
2) the neuveau, these are the people that want a sleeker look. they want their computer to match the sexy look of everything else that seems to be ergonomic and avant garde.
these two groups end up fighting over which is better... all in all its still a computer and it does exactly the same thing. (although maybe a tad faster) |

Theres plenty of very fast looking cars that have the raging power of a Dodge Neon to prove my point... and then there's the people who put racing stripes on them and popcan thingies on their exhausts to make them sound more powerful. Im all for a computer conserving the least amount of space, but it is a tool, I hate to see it made to be some kind of fashion statement. Thats just a marketing ploy to feed to materialistic people who dont know jack about computers and will pay an outrageous price just to get the latest 'design' that will most likely have poor cooling and be outdated in no time at all since you cant upgrade them so they pay another $3000 in another couple years to buy a new one. Bleh. |

ROFL. That sounds pretty stupid given that ALL PC's are practically obsolete in a few years. It's called progress and it moves fast - Apple's aesthetic shifts to reflect this, so why can't you adjust your preconceptions? Your thinking is fossilized and you sound like a design bigot.
Apple design is both stylish and functional. It's widely and shamelessly emulated across the industry. Calling it a gimmick implies that's all it's value is aesthetic. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some people just prefer elegance as well as functionality.

I have an SGI Iris Indigo on my desk . . . it holds up my Quake and Wolfenstein boxes.
Originally a 10,000$ propietary workstation, now a $50 purple bookend.
Eventually I'd like to track down one of these:
http://www.cray.com/company/h_systems.html
Could probably be used for some stylish shelving.
However, I still sometimes use my little beige K6, which is covered in stickers, missing one foot, and reeks of tobacco . . . because, you know, I could actually upgrade the thing (it started life as a 386 40, then became a P5 100, then a K6 200).
At least a Cray looks imposing enough to fire the imagination . . . solid enough to make me want to start a giant calculation on it and see if it sweats . . . I get excited about digital art when my tool has jet intakes on it:
http://www.bprince.com/Workstation.jpg
But hand me a transluscent clam shell or a big plastic tit, and I'm not exactly going to feel like throwing an 800,000 patch scene at it . . . in fact, I'm probably going to be worried about breaking it.
But then none of us are the target market for this thing. I mean, LCD screen, 800 MHz chip and 256 megs of RAM, with only one extra slot for more? . . . this ain't for digital artists.

Oh, like the Cube? It might of been nice if it wasnt a fire hazard. I dont have much against Apple, they do make some fine hardware, and an equally fine OS, but there's a problem when you try to get people to buy things based on looks over practicality. The previous I-Macs had the same problem. The entire local highschools computers were replaced with them, and of course, they spent a lot of money for computers the teachers couldnt even use, not only because they didnt have disk drives included, but also because of the freaking horrible design of the mice and keyboards. All that school money spent, and they actually had to buy new computers to replace them just because so many teachers were disgusted. Perhaps it was an error on behalf of whomever thought I-Macs could be used as an all around alternative, and not just a web browser though.
This is by far not an argument about PC's versus MACS, they both have their advantages and disadvantages, its when design gets in the way of practicality thats the problem. Should everyone have flat beige and cold boxes for computers? No, but people shouldn't have computers that look so funky that they cause them to overheat and literally become near impossible to upgrade or service. Any mechanic who might of worked on a Ford will tell you the same thing.. its almost an exageration, but you practically have to lift the engine block out to replace a stupid spark plug. |

Adobe has, for the past few years, rigged a couple filters (radial blur is the one they like to use) to be faster on the Mac to keep Apple happy. When taken as a whole, there's not much difference between the PC and Mac when working in Photoshop, assuming similar amounts of RAM.
Maya likes a high-end video card, which pretty much disqualifies the iMac. I doubt Motorolla's FPU performance is on par with AMD's, but that's just speculation on my part. |

Um, before you guys run out and label this thing as a toy, check the specs. For a machine that's not even aimed at high end users, it's powerful enough to be used by them.
And as far as ram goes, it can hold 1GB, which is still enough for most people.
Buy one for your mom for Christmas, and I'll bet she'll find it easier to use than a pc any day. |

Didn't I see that in a Pixar movie once? Geforce2 MX isn't bad for this things target market. I still say it would be a nightmare for anyone who tries to upgrade or service it tho, with that non-uniform case. And what about cooling? Dont see any vents.. |

Most consumers don't upgrade their machines any more anyway, they just buy a whole new computer every few years.
The computer market is slowly turning into the "every other electronic/mechanical" market.
Nobody upgrades their car or radio components any more either, they just buy a whole new one. I personally like this method, it ensures compatiblility...

"Oh, is that the desk lamp animation thingy from Pixar? Kewl!"
Well, uhm, I wouldn't buy one. They're trying very very hard to be innovative, and they deserve an A+ for that, but... pretty colors, cubes, lamps,... I can understand people making art on the computer, but turning a computer into art is a bit much for me. I wonder how much this thing will overheat with all those components into such a small space... I mostly wonder "WHY?".
(I also wonder if you have to clap your hands or flip the roll-switch on the power cord to turn it on.)
I will never understand Apple. |

You guys gotta remember, Apple has always used the advertising strategy of, "We are DIFFERENT, we are INNOVATIVE, we are ARTSY because fashionable designers love us and swears by us."
*sigh* |
