that are the first scetches I saw from you pierre and they are (that's my impression) totaly different than your paintings.
(not in a bad way of course....just different in style I guess.)

thanks drunken

silber, I know what you mean and totally agree with you. My drawings tend to be very constructional in nature, occasionally I might take the drawing to the next level and shade it (used to do that alot before) but most often I might paint instead of "shading" it. But they are often very simplistic and If I can say more with less I will not waste any graphite on my pencil. The few sketches that you saw above are what most often lies as a guide for a painting. I can't paint if I don't solve the form first, preferably from several angles.

matthew, in about 90 % of the cases, yes, I do make a drawing before painting. the drawing is constructional and guides me in calculating the shapes that the form and its planes will create, according to the light and mood I choose. But the drawing is never detailed, just acts as a guide, sometimes It is comprised of no more the 10 strokes, sometimes more. And in the rest of the 10 % of the cases, I just might begin by building my forms directly with blobs of color, but I still have the "drawing of the form" in the back of my head. Sometimes, abstract shapes can tell you how to build your forms actually, kind of a reversed process since its the form that creates the shapes. not the other way around.

Edit: I didn't pay attention to the fact that you were specifically asking about "oil" paintings. The above was a general description of digital and traditional but in the case of oil paintings it could be more complex, depending on the technique you choose for painting, and there are lots of different variations on similar techniques. Generally I use an underpainting for oil paintings, that is an underdrawing with a color wash, used to do the wash in diluted oil paints before, but nowadays, the painting gets a heavy diluted acrylic wash, that way I can begin painting wet in wet faster since the drying of the acrylic is so much faster than with oils. Oil painting is a tricky thing due to the chemical process involved and if you want to preserve your painting for the future, you should really plan your painting very carefully.

This one is one of two done during an art history lecture. I swear, i need to pay more attention during those things in the future. It seems it's turned into a class where i go and draw for an hour. seriously....

the original copy, done on legal pad w/ ballpoint pen.

A nicer version, inked on bristol board.
