Ive been having this very strange thing happen to me the last months and I cant seem to figure out what is causing it.

Some times when I click on "Launch Internet Explorer" my computer resets iteself right into a hard reboot. I have no idea whats causing this. It doesnt happen every time. It doesnt seem to be related to having cookies turned on or off... or any cookies as I clean them out regularly and I empty the temporary internet files out daily. It doesnt seem to reset the computer when I launch something from the favorites menu or open a .html page on my own machine by double clicking it though.

My system specs are:
Win98se
Athlon 1.4Ghz
512Mb DDR RAM

so any ideas? Im lost.

How long's it been since you've reformated your cpu? If more than a year that's definately your problem. If more than 6 mo's I'd still recomend it. It's obviously a software prob. And since IE is part of windows you can try and use your windows instal cd to reinstal IE. Don' remember if that's possible sense if I get anything weird like that I just reformat... Hope you've been backing up...

How long have you had it on w/o this problem happening recently?

The menu and title bar for my task manager have disappeared, and I have no idea how to get them back. Has this ever happened to anyone before?

(sorry to piggyback, awetopsy, but I didn't see the sense in creating another tech problem thread)

Atrophy: I reformatted about a month ago to get rid of the problem... still doing it. When I turn on the computer and get into windows, I clickon IE6 and it reboots. It will do this usually about 3 times before I can click on IE and actually start browsing... when that happens I can leave it on as long as I want (usually) it will still occasionally do it even after it has worked most of the day.. Im getting pretty fed up with it tho so I think Im just gonna give in and Install XP pro

My theory is this:
With every new peice of software being written optimized for windowsXP, win98 is getting less and less support. I have a feeling that the problem lies in IE6 and Directx9 being wirtten for XP and some sort of conflict is happening. Keep in mind that this is only a theory, but I have heard of wierd stuff happening to people with DX9, but not everybody.

Impaler: I just read this somewhere off of google groups
Quote:
"The surrounding items will reappear if you doubleclick the pane's
border."

dunno if that helps

This will sound GHEY. Its like when someone says they have a MAC issue and somone posts, GET A PC, problem solved.

I havent used IE in about a year. I use Opera. I know there are pros and cons but it is just so helpful.
At work I use various Web apps. I used to have 3 browsers open at all times. Now, with Opera, its one browser that contains 3 tabs, each for a seperate window. (Like Excel)
BEYOND that I have 3 other windows that contain EATPOO, SIJUN, and something else... The window set up is saved easily so whenever I open Opera I automatically have all these windows available to me. There are other neat features also... Its worth a look if you havent looked already..

You need to pay to get rid of the banner at the top but that can easily be gotten around if you have KAZZA... Cool

Even IE5 was able to reboot my machine (on w2k). There's Opera, Moz, Phoenix.... why bother with IE 6? and w98, for that matter, but probably You won't like to change that Wink

If You suspect DX 9, is it reallly important to You? 8,1 won't do?

EDIT
isn't Your problem so called "cold boot"? it's conected with too weak PSU, but usually reboots when windows gui is initialized Question Shocked

Yo Awetopsy...

Here comes some tips to make your box stable again.

1. Format hd and install win98(make sure it's the "Second Edition")
2. Install all hardware drivers(gfx drivers, networkcard drivers etc.)
3. Install DirectX 8 (NOT 9!...v8 will keep your box nice and stable)
4. Install IE6
5. Install the rest of your proggies again

If you install in that order it should take care of your problems.
If your box continues to crash - like mine did 7 months ago -
the risk is that it's your hd that's damaged.
In that case you will have to get a new hd.

Good luck!

=)

yepsir... go to XP pro...

When I used win98 (2nd ed), I rebooted from freezes 4 or 5 times a day. Now, with XP pro, the box is on 24/7 for a week or more before I have to reboot.
