Im at it again, this time, NO BLACK LINES.
Hog Dude WIP v01
So, I am trying to improve my questionable paintingt "cough" skills "cough". I want this to come together without black lines at all, so how do I get there from here. What techniques/tips can you give me to help me pin point this work of art, make it as defined and well rounded as a normal picture.

Wow great.
Don't you think that the style suggests depth a lot better too?
I think all you have to do now is add details.
Maybe highlights in the eyes and a mustache
(He seems a little young I think...)
This almost looks finished to me already. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Hey
I see you are improving too.
I would add a brownish dark background with texture and cracks and stuff and then add a shadow behind the character. Then you could add hair strokes to the beard and the hair, that would be cool.
The black tatoo on his arm is awesome.
If you want more 3d you have to make darker shadows and lighter highlights, a background helps very much for depth.
keep it up

Hey
I had to try a paint-over, kind of made the changes as I said earlier, I screwed up the muscles a bit and the hand holding the el-bow.

Not bad either. But I don't know about the background. It kinda has a fantasy art look to it.
Because it's supposed to be a "Biker Al Ian Dude" the black sky background makes more sense.
Maybe something should be in the distance behind the figure ... trees or houses in grayscale!?
In the lower half of the image since it looks like a view from below ... _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

ROTFLMAO Thats great Matt!! Love the eyes!!!
AndyT - The added depth, I feel you there, I planned on making him older, but thats later. Looking for late 40's early 50's in age. Only going to use Harley esk colors. The Orange isant orange enough though. Just noticed that.... The beard and hair need to look like a beard and hair, thats down the road too.
I think Im actualy getting good at this LOL.
Again Matt, LOVE the eyes!!! _________________

OK, taking the advice in hand, heres step two!
Hod Dude WIP v02
Started adding the wrinkles, not exactly happy with how they are turning out though The beared turned out well on the flip side, added more depth to it. Not sure if Im happy with the amount of depth yet, let me know what you think!

Hey
The Beard is lovely, it just came to my mind how you can give it more volume.
You can give him a little bit more neck and shoulder on his left side, right from our view. Also a bit more brown on his left arm, right from our view and make it darker. that should make the arm look more round.

Hmmm. His face really looks different. He looks more relaxed.
Maybe try it in front of a mirror. I think there shouldn't be any wrinkles on the forehead.
He's not raising his eyebrows.
I think I prefer the first version.
The beard is a lot better though! _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Im at it again!!! Heeeheheheheheheheheeehehehe... Yes, Im insain!
Hog Dood WIP v03
As I was painting along, minding my own business I clicked the hair off, and what do you know. I liked it ALOT better! So I made hime BALD!! Added Liver and Onion spots (not finished with this step yet) I added hair where there was none before. (Sign of getting older) Also am detailing the flesh out a good bit more. Still looking for C&C on this! Also wanting to know some interesting suggestions for the eyes!!

AndyT - Of course, after I make ALL these updates NOW you show up LOL. (kidding) I feel what you mean on the relaxed thing, however Im not much on faces, and looking at mine just gets random laughter from the peanut gallery I was trying to get the wrinkled disapointed and slightly angry brow thing going on. If you know what I mean!?
I am also still NOT happy with his brow at all.. Ive been kind of avoiding it til I think of something better!?!?!? _________________

Small update.
Hog Dood WIP v04
Hope this is more along the lines on what you ment AndyT. Tweeked the lips a bit, happier with them, not sure if this is what you ment. I also played with his forhead, made him look more frowning I think, maybe a bit of a snarle. I am hoping to get more from his eyes in his intent. Though Im not sure how to go about it. Maybe I'll just copy and paste Matt's eyes LOL. Anyway, what do you think?

Oh yeah, C&C is no longer requested, it is now required, or this forum will self destruct and reconstruct faster then your broweser can refresh! (Trust me, its painful) _________________

I was gonna write that ... try painting wrinkles between his eyebrowns.
But you already did that. Looks great IMO.
I didn't like the make-him-bald-idea first.
But I think it's because his head looks a little deformed.
(I too didn't get it right in the overpaint)
The highlight on his forehead kinda doesn't look like a highlight.
I think it looks as if the skin has a different color there.
And what I didn't realize earlier ... he doesn't have eyebrows.
That's something else you can try.
Maybe this time I'm faster with the c&c than you with the next update?

Smudge this, adjust that, remove this, slap that.
Hog Dood WIP v05
(The deffinitive AndyT eddition)
Eye brows huh, CHECK.
Rounded skull huh, CHECK.
Meaner lips huh, CHECK.
Started to work on the eyes, not sure if Im happy with it, even with the reflections they just seem, dull.... My wife likes the fuller lips, so they stay, but I took your direction and made him snarl. But the EYES, OHH THE EYES ARE KILLING ME!! /em cuts and pastes Matts eyes

Good! I like your meaner lips better too.
The eyes ... I think maybe the reflections are too bright.
Try painting over them with a black low opacity brush several times.
You should see pretty soon if that looks better.
If it doesn't ... then the placement might be the problem.
I think strong highlights in the eyes make him look younger and too healthy.
Hey I think it will be finished soon ... _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

OK, I cant see anything I want to correct anymore on my own. I think that means Im done with this piece... any final suggestions?
Hog Dood WIP v07 (I think thats right?)
Dulled the eyes out a bit, which helped! Cleaned up the borders of the eyes, as well as added some highlighting to make them feel attached to his head (yeah, figure that one out!) Also cleaned up the lines on the outside of the figure.

Yeah I love it.
You can call it finished art and start the next crazy project
The background and the logo make it perfect!
I added it to my favorites ... @ Deviantart that is! _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Sweet, guess we're in agreement, time to move it over to the other forum and delete the WIP's. _________________

i realize that your character is not human, but he seems to be based on human characteristics. being such, i think that the wrinkles at the eyes should be more similar to human wrinkles. typically, the wrinkles at the eyes emminate from one spot - the outer 'point' of the eye. i did a quick illustration, i hope it helps.
