I seem to have a terribly difficult time moving past the 'speedpainting' point and actually refining something to the point where it looks finished. Here's my most recent attempt - more than a sketch, but it's still no where near finished.

Link (and original sketch): http://www.funfolly.com/rfhome/art/draw3/swamp1b.htm

It's basically a complete paint-over of my original speedpainting, which you can see in the link.

I'm not terribly happy with the composition right now, so I'm not sure if I want to continue with it or not. Either way, I'd like some input on what I've got so far or just general tips on carrying a painting past the initial sketch stage - what I'm doing right, what I'm doing wrong; what's working, what isn't. That kind of stuff. Thanks =)

its pretty good. I always liked paintings that gave a sense of height. try expanding the canvas upwards and draw the trees in perspective to get a sense of looking up. Maybe that would make the image more dynamic.

Just shows you why you usually do a quick gesture sketch under your drawing to get things feeling right. The speed drawing is excellent and has a great feel to it. While the other one is a WIP, it loses some of the dramaticism and atmoshpere that the quick one still has. Maybe try painting over the sketch and see what you get.
