I am looking to submit some work to some gaming companies notably White Wolf. In the submissions guide they specify that they want work with a lot of tone variatin and detail but at the same time they want it to be "printable" I was just wondering are there any really big taboos that I should be aware of when making high toned mostly very dark artwork for printing?

I'm not really an expert on this but the general rule for all creative work is that if it looks good, then it is good. Since WW only wants printed (physical) submissions you should be able to tell from the copies you've made if it looks good or not.

One thing to look out for, which can be a bit tricky if you're doing your stuff in the computer, is to make sure that areas in the picture won't go "flat" when it's down on paper. Very dark areas might go completely black and cause lots of unwanted contrast and screw things up in general.

Don't be afraid to tweak contrast and colors on your copies to make sure they look the best you can.

Best of luck with your submission!

Hey, there's a list on Yahoo for people in the RPG industry which is excellent--I got some work from White Wolf from that list a while ago, when their art director put out an open call for people on that list to submit to him via e-mail. I will PM you the name of the list.

Thank you Mon and Socar. That is definatly something to keep in mind when printing from the computer. But if I'm going to be just working in black and white, I will most likely just use ink and wash.

I'd be interested in getting the name of the list, too! Thanks.

Jason Felix was my ex-roomate for a few years, and I watched him do tons of artwork for White Wolf. They obviously have a thing for moody, high-contrast stuff, similar to Tim Bradstreet or Jason's work. Just make sure you don't have ink-wash type stuff that's got tones too light/dark to be reproduced--because they could potentially turn into white or black, instead of keeping their subtlety. I'd say as long as you keep your lightest and darkest tones within 20%~80% grey, you'd be fine(not counting your 100% black and 0% white--so basically skip 10% and 90%).

Do the photocopy test:

If your B/W artwork can be photocopied on a crappy photocopy machine, and all the details are still there, then you've passed the test.
